Be it known that I, ART J. SHINK and SOLOMON COHEN, citizens of the United Another object 4is tov provide a practical device of the above character which shall be sure and efficient in its operation.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
Certain features herein .shown and de -4 scribed are shown, described` and claimed in our co-pending applications Serial Nos.
345,328, 354,616, 363,913, and 370,496 filed in the United States Patent Oiiice December 16, 1919,*January 28th, 1920, March 6th, 1920, and April 1st, 1920, respectively, and accordingly are not claimed herein.
With the above exception, the invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the apparatus hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational View of apparatus embodying our invention with: an iron in position on the stand and showing the quick'- make and break device in on position and showing furtherthe shielded actuating means of operating this device.
Fig. 2 is a detailedcross-sectional view cut along line 2 2 of Fig. 1 showing the sockets from the contact on the iron and the shielded actuating means centrally disposed relative to the sockets; and 'f Fig. 3 is a detailed' cross-sectional view cut along line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the stand is seen to comprise a base 10 preferably of metal and a support 11 for the electric iron 12 or the like apparatus mounted on pillars 13 upstanding from-said base.
Extending from the base and secured thereto by means such as screws, clips or rivets 14 is a bottom or support 15 preferably of metal for the casing lafremovably secured to said bottom and in which are mounted` the quick-break switch mechanism and the shielded terminals which will now be described. 1
Secured within the casing adjacent the top thereof and f insulated therefrom as by the block of insulationvl are the switch electric supply as by means of the lead wires 18 which pass into the casing through a threaded bushing 19 suitably insulated from the casing as by the insulating lining 20. The switch clips may be secured in any suitable manner. Thus they may be provided' with attaching {ianges 21 through which pass the screws 22. vPivoted inoperative relation to said switch clips in the manner `hereinafter' describedA is a .pair of switch bladesI 23, 23. These switch blades are jointed at their rear end by a cross-piece 24.0f insulating material.
The casing is formed with a vertical hood l 25 in which is embedded a block of insulating material 16 having formed therein a pair of spaced vertical recesses 27, 27 Within each of these recesses is. 'a metallic socket member 2,8, 28 each formed prefer?"l ably from two pieces of sheet metal 28a and 28b lining the walls of said recesses. ,'Ihe walls of the sockets 28, 28v extend into the lower portion of the casing as at 28, 28d and the switch blades are pivoted to the eXtension of said walls as at 29, 29.
The meansy for simultaneously operating the switch blades `23, 23 upon the iron being placed in position on the stand will now be described.
The operation of the stand and switch mechanism will now be understood. When the iron 12 is placed on the stand, the hood member 37 lits over the hood portion 23 of the casing 15a and the contact members 38, 38"regi ster in the sockets 28, 28"; at the same time the male actuating member .39 registers in the intermediate socket 30, and pushes down the rod 31 compressing the spring 32. HThis carries down the spring 34 and extends the same, thus transmitting a downward force to the cross bridge 24 and producing anupward moment to snap the blades 23, 23 into the contact clips or jawsl?, 17.
It will thus be seen that there is provided apparatus in `which the several ob- ]ects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the most f y severe conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as variouschanges might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be in- .terpreted as illustrative and not in a limit- 1n sense.

2. In electric flat iron construction, in combination an iron containing an electric heating element, a stand provided with means for leading electric current thereto, means on sald iron and stand adapted t0 lead current into said iron upon said iron being placed in position on said stand, said means comprising circuit making means on said stand and actuating means for said circuit making means adapted to be operated by means on the iron other than the current-leading means thereon.

In electric flat ironv construction, in combination an iron containing an electric heating element, a stand for said iron, means on the rear of said stand for leading electric current thereto and means on the rear of said iron adapted tolbe disposed in operative relation to said means on said Stand to lead current into said iron upon the iron being placed in position on said stand, said means on said stand comprising contact sockets, means for leading current to said sockets, and said means on said iron comprisin contact members adapted to enter sai sockets and means other than said contact members for operating said means for leading current to said sockets.

In electric flat iron construction, in combination an iron containing an electric heating element, a stand for said iron, means on the. rear of said stand for leading electric current thereto and means on the rear'of said iron adapted to be disposed in operative relation to said means on said stand t0 lead current into said iron upon the iron being placed in position on said stand, said means on said stand comprising contact sockets, means for leading current to said sockets, and said means on said iron comprising contact members adapted to enter said sockets and means other than said contact members and coacting therewith for operating said means for leading current to said sockets.

In combination with an electric flat iron or the like apparatus having contact members thereon, an electric heating stand for said iron comprising a support, an automatic switch mechanism for connecting the electric supply to the iron comprising means for connecting said stand to the electric supply, and means adapted to be operated upon the iron being placed in position on the stand for leading the current from the stand to the heating element, said means comprising a movable member in actuating connection with said switch mechanism, and means for shielding said operating member.
6. 'In electric flat iron construction, in combination, an iron containing an electric heating element, a stand for said iron, means on the rearV of said stand for leading electric current thereto and means on the rear of said iron adapted to be disposed in op-\ erative relation to said means on said stand to lead current into said iron upon the iron being placed in position on said stand, said means on said stand comprising contact sockets, a recess adjacent said sockets, means for leading current to said sockets, an actuating member in said recess of said last mentioned current-leading means and said means on said iron comprising contact members adapted to enter said sockets and an operating member adjacent thereto adaptedy to register in said recess to operate said actuating member.
7. In an electric heating stand for electric irons and the like apparatus, a quickbreak switch mechanism comprising a pair of switch blades, an actuating member for said blades, and means .on said actuating member for normally maintaining said switch blades in inoperative position adapted to be operated by said actuating member, said means comprising a resilient member carried by said actuating member and .a resilient-member secured thereto.
