LOCK FOR PAPER BOXES.
' Specification of Letters Patent.4
Patented aug. s, ieee.
Application filed August 1, 1921. Serial No. 488,814.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that EUGENE. KoTTERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and ay resident of Marion, county of Grant, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Lock for Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a paper box. The chief object of the invention is to provide a paper box which may "be formed from a single blank with suitable locking portions, whereby the box blank, when the parts have been moved into the box forming position, will be locked in said last mentioned position.
The chief feature of the invention consists in the particular locking means provided for the box blank.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying draw-` ings and the following description and and claims. l
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a plan view of the box blank with a portion thereof folded. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box blank showing a portion thereof in box forming position and one end thereof in an intermediate locking position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and in the direction of the arrows and shows the locking connection.
In the drawings 10 indicates the bottom, base or body portion of the box blank which is herein provided withV a pair of sides and a pair of ends. Each of the ends are substantially ident-ical and, therefore, a description of one will suflice. The end is herein indicated by the numeral 11 and is preferably integral with the'body portion 10, being provided with a crease 12 between the end and the body portion. The end is also provided with a parallel crease 13 and another parallel crease 14. The parallel crease 13 insures that the end 11 may be doubled back upon itself to form a strong construction, with the free end 15 thereof, is adapted to be secured to the body portion 12 by suitable means, such as adhesive materiall and the like, and is adapted to be positioned as shown in Fig. 3.
The box blank also is provided with a pair of integral sides, each of which-.comprise an f' nected to the body portion 10 by the crease connection 19. l Each of the sides is provided with a locking construction. The sides at each end are provided with substantially similar locking y portions, but herein the preferred arrangement is that one of the sides is provided with identical locking portions, while the other end is provided with similar but complementarily positioned locking portions. This construction is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 and in the open end of Fig. 2. Thus, one of the sides upon the inner side portion 16 is provided with a projecting portion 20, while the other side upon its outer side portion is provided with a projectingportion 21. It is to be understood that the projecting portions 21 and 20 are at least equal in length, and preferably are greater than one half the width of the end portion 11 of the box blank. jecting portions 2O and 2l is a similar portion 22 which portion 22, when folded back upon the projecting portion 2O or 21, when the sides are folded along the ed e 18, form a pocket 23 adapted to receive tiev opposite projecting portion, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. After the projecting portions 20 and 2l of opposite sides and adjacent ends have been positioned in the respective adjacent.
hesive, thereby forming a locked and rigid construction.
Any suitable cover means may be associated with the boX, such as a similar box adapted to telescope the box construction herein described.
The -invention claimed is: 1. A box construction includingl a body Associated with each of the pro-' portion and double sides and ends, a flap on each end of said sides and a pocket formed on each end of said sides by doubling the same,.said Hap and pocket being of such form that when doubled each end of a side is rovded With a projecting tongue and poc et sothat the tongue on one end of one ofsaid sides Will extend into and be enclosed Within the adjacent pocket on the same end of the opposite side for providing a dual lock construction.
2. A box eonstructionincludinga bodyA when doubled each end of a side is provided with a projecting tongue and adjacent pocket lportion to provide a dual lock construction.
3. A box construction including a body portion and double sides, a fiap on each end of said sides and of such form that When doubled each end ofaside is provided with a projecting tongue and adjacent pocket p0rtion to provide a dual look construction, and ends secured to Athe body portion to enclose said interlocking 'constructionl In Witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed portion and double sides and ends', a Hap on \1ny signature.
each end of said sides,"and of such form that EUGENE KOTTERMAN.
