K M -a6 centres- STATES PATENT oFFicE.
JOHN R. MOODY, QFL'OS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
HINGE.
asaooa.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. Moonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in thecounty of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for swingably connecting two members at fadjoining edges. w
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device which can be applied from the inside for instance a window screen from the inside of the room while the screen is in the frame.
Another object is to provide a hinge member to reach over both sides of a sash so that a screw or bolt can be inserted through the hinge member and through the sash so as to clamp the hinge member firmly to the sash.
Another object is to provide a hinge which allows by its construction a saving of material, being of thin material and still offering strength. i
Other objects will appear from the following description and appended claims as well as from the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a horizontal cross section of the device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical front elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is an unfolded sheet to illustrate the forming of the one member of the hinge to engage over a sash.
Fig. l is a fragmentary cross sectional view of the outer shank on line 4- of Fig. 2, in enlarged scale.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of the outer shank similar to Fig. 4, having no nut member.
The hinge member 4t in Fig. 1 is preferably secured to the stationary part of articles on which the device is being used, as the frame of'a window, indicated'at 5. Screws 6 are used to secure the hinge member 4: to such window frame.
It is naturally rather' troublesome and even hazardous to put a window screen into place after the window frame is disposed in the walls of a house, and more so to put hinges from the outside on such a window frame and screen.
lVith this device, the hinge member 4 can Specification of Letters Patent.
The second hinge member is preferably made of U-shape to reach over the sash Patented July 18,1922.
Application filed October 25, 1920. Serial No. 419,289.
easily be secured to the window frame while the screen or'sash is left out,-while the second hinge member is formed to receive the window screen in slightly opened pos1t1onedgewise. Afterthe hinge'member l is secured to the window frame 5, the hinge member? is swung just enough to allow an insertionof the sash between the two shanks 8 and '9 of the U-shaped hinge member 7. The sash is then drawn into proper place or position within the window frame, and a screw 10 is inserted through the hinge member and sash. The nut 11 is preferably somehow secured to the hinge member 7, just enough to stick to the hinge member until the screw engages the threads 19 of the nut,
spot-welding or soldering being easily accomplished for such purpose without much expense or trouble. If no nut is provided, the shank 8 of the hinge member 7 naturally must be threaded as indicated at 20 so that the screw 10 can so engage when disposed in the manner illustrated in the drawing, as will easily be understood without further illustration. v
In Fig. 3 the hinge member 7 is illustrated as made out of a flat piece of material, being cut in at the lines 12, 18 and 14:, so that the center portion 15 can be bent at the line 16 to be rolled in for the loop of the hinge member, the flaps or shanks 8 and 9 to be bent at the lines 17 and 18 to form the U-shaped hinge member 7, illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
This hinge member can be made of thin material and still possess proportionally much strength, sincethe shank 8 cannot bend as long as the shank 9 engages over the sash from the rear and thereby drawing the shank 8 towards the sash on the front, and the shank 9 cannot bend as long as the shank 8 of the hinge member engages in the manner illustrated in the drawing. In this manner the hinge member 7 engages firmly with the sash if so applied.
The applying of the hinge is also very simple, since the member 4 can first and easily be secured to a window frameas long as no sash is in the frame, and then allowing the sash to be slipped into place within the window frame between the shanks 8 and member and through the sash as described above and illustrated in the drawing while the sash is in closed position within the frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a hinge, one member having means to be secured to a frame; a second member of U-shaped cross section having one shank to reach over a sash from the inside and having another shank to reach over the same sash from the outside, both shanks having perforations one hole in one shank coming into alignment with a hole in the other shank, the perforation in the outer shank being provided with threads and engaging means inserted from the inside to freely pass with its front portion through the perfora- 2. In a hinge, a hinge member of ti-shaped cross section having one shank to reach over a sash from the inside and having another shank to reach over the same sash from the outside, both shanks having perforations one hole in one shank coming into alignment with a hole in the other shank, threads provided in suitable relation to the perforations in the outer shank forming an integral part of the outer shank to allow a drawing of the outer shank towards the inner shank for clamping both shanks to the sash from the inside.
In'testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
