LATHE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1922.
Application filed March 5, 1920. Serial No. 363,400.
T all whom it mc'y concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN iVarron, a citizen of Lithuania, residing at Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathe Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for lathes having more particular reference to a work-holding device adapted to be clamped on the usual face plate of the lathe.
The invention has for an object to provide a. simple device of this kind which may be easily attached in place and permits of ready adjustment of the work.
F or further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view, with parts broken away, of the attachment.
Figure 2 is a plan view with parts broken away.
Figure 3 is a front view.
Figure 1 is a detail face view of the base.
Figure 5 is a detail elevation of the worm device for adjusting the main table.
My improved attachment comprises a rectangular base provided with apertures 11 to receive suitable bolts whereby it may be secured to the face plate of the lathe in front of the tools thereon. Mounted on this base is a main table 12 having a dovetail slide groove 13 in its upper face extend ing outwardly from the base 10. This table is adjustably secured to the base by keys 14 engaging in registering grooves in the side edges of the base and in rearward extensions 12 of the table 12, screws 15 taking into said rearward extensions and engaging ofi'set heads on the keys and serving to hold the keys in place.
The table is adjusted on the base 10 by means of a rack 16 on said base engaged by a pinion element 17 on one end of a spindle 18 on whose opposite end is mounted a worm gear 19 meshed by a worm pinion 20 on a spindle 21 which projects upwardly from the table 12, and is swiveled in a bushing 22 in the latter, the spindle having a squared end 23 for turning purposes.
Mounted in the slide groove 13 is a slide 25 which has on its upper face a dovetail projection 26 whose sides run in a direction at right angles to the slide. Upon this slide is mounted a work holder 27 having a recess in its underside in which the projection en gages. This work holder is formed in its upper surface with suitable devices indicated at 28, for holding the work in a well known manner. This work holder is secured in place by means of a link 29 pivoted at one end to an. ear 30 on the work holder and engaged at its opposite end with the face plate and the lathe. Its suitable tool engaging end 23 may be used to adjust slide 25 and the work pieces held thereon by holders 27 in a longitudinal direction to the tools of the lathe.
Adjustment of the slide 25 with its work holders and the work held thereby to and from the tools of the lathe is effected by a screw 32 swiveled in the table 12 and threaded through a projection 33 on the underside of the slide 25. Extending parallel to this screw are a pair of bars M enga-ged at one end in a head 85 depending from the table 12 and recessed at opposite ends as at 36 to receive screws 87 which pass through slots 38 in the base 10 and are threaded into said recesses. The head and the rod 341 engaged therein are rotated by means of a crank adapted to be secured to the outer end of screw 32. v
The part shown in Figures 6 and 7 comprises a head 10 having one aperture 41 to receive a tool bar and the other aperture 13 to a centre member, the head having split cars 13 whereby the said members may be clamped in place in a well known manner.
The part shown in Figures 8 and 9 comprises a sleeve 44 adapted to be screwed on the spindle of the lathe andhaving a transverse groove 45 at one end adapted to receive a tool.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a base, a table adjustable on said base and having extensions overlapping the sides thereof, keys fitting in registering grooves in the base and table thereby the latter is slidably held on the base, a slide on said table movable transversely of the base, and a work holder on said slide movable transversely thereto, and means for adjusting said table on said base, said means comprising a rack on said base, a pinion meshing with said rack and rotatably carried by said base, and a Worm gear device for retating said pinion.
V 2. A device of the class described, com prising a base, a table adjustable on said base and having extensions overlappingthe sides thereof, keys fitting in registering grooves in the base and table thereby the latter is slidably held on the base, a slide on said table movabletransversely of the base, and a Work holder on said slide movable transversely thereto, and means tor adj Listing said table on said base, said means comprising a rack on said base, a pinion meshing with said rack and rotatably carried by said base, and a worm gear device for rotating said pinion, and means for adjusting said table on said base, and means for adjusting said slide on said base.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a base, a table adjustable on said base and having extensions overlapping the sides thereof, keys fitting in registering grooves in the base and table thereby the latter is slidably held on the base, a slide on said table movable transversely of the base,
and a Work holder on said slide movable signature.
