ABDOMINAL PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1922.
Application filed November 13, 1919. Serial No. 337,678.
ers and abdominal protectors and has special relation to devices of such character which include metallic guards or protecting plates.
There have been devices in the past according to my knowledge which served to retain a metallic plate of aluminum in front of 'the body below the abdomen, thereby serving the same purpose for which my invention is designed. It is the object of my invention, however, to provide, in connection with the desired form of athletic supporter, a pouch within which fits the aluminum protector plate, the edge of which plate 15 protected against bruising the wearer. It is thus possible to use thesupporter without the aluminum plate, and to remove the plate for cleansing and washing the garment, and I provide, among other things, for a simple method of opening'and closing the pouch above mentioned.
These objects and other advantages to be noted I accomplish by that certain construc tion and arrangement. of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a section thereof onthe line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view.in perspective of the aluminum plate removed from the supporter.
The device has preferably an elastic waist 1 band 1, with leg or cross bands 2. It has 'also a mesh front 3-which is preferably nonelastic andis stitched to the inside of the front portion of the cross or leg bands 2.
In additionto the above parts which go to make up a supporter such as has been in use for some years, I provide an additional piece of mesh 4, which is stitched to the outsideof the frontqgof the cross bands, as
indicated at 5. The upper edge of theinneror normal mesh front is provided with a tape 6, which tape is preferably stitched on the waist band in such a way as to leave two free ends 7 at the center.
The upper edge of the extra mesh piece is finished with a piece of fabric 8 which is not attached to the waist band, but left-free so that together with the inner mesh piece, a pouch is formed, having a Wide mouth at the upper end. I
The fabric 8 is provided with eyelets, 9, through which the tapes 7 are passed, andtied to close the pouch.
An aluminum protector 10 shaped to conform to the lower abdomen, preferably is inserted in the pouch, made up as above, said pouch being, of course, of a proper shape to receive it. The plate 10 is preferably perforated as indicated by the dots 11 in Figure 2, thereby providing holes for stitching 11 around the edge of the plate a felt or other soft fold of material 12 to prevent the plate from bruising the wearer.
It .is readily observable fromthe above description that the su porter or protector is provided with a met lic plate which provides an armor for the parts to be protected,
and that said plate is readily removable, by-
' wording permits of such an interpretation.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters' Patent is:
A supporter having an elastic structure comprising a waist band and leg loops depending therefrom, a removable, concavepocket-forming, rigid insert piece, and fabric means mounted on the front of the elastic structure and forming a pocket extending upwardly from the crotch, in which pocket the insert is to be placed; said pocket being open at the top for introduction of the insert, and means to close the opening at the top of the pocket.
nueo GOLDSMITH.
