The WheelV 21 is provided vWith spaced flanges 22 to define the groove and are adapted to engage the outer and inner faces of the ball 5 of the rail 6A. One face of the vvheel 21 has formed thereon counter sunk gear teethv 22 adapted to mesh With a pinon 23V journaled on a stub shaft 24 carried by bearings`25.
The bearings 25 are secured to thehead 9 upon opposite sides of a slot 26 Which permits the pinion 23 to extendV through the the latter are perferably ofthe flanged type. A forked member 27 is j ournaled on the stub shaft 24 and straddles the pinion 23 and carries a spring actuated double end dog 28 adapted to rachet over the pinion 2B in one direction and adapted to bight or grip the teeth of said pinion when moved in an opposite direction so as to bring about rotation of the wheel 21 when desired. The dog 28 is capable of operation in a reverse direction. The forked member 2.7 is provided with a tubular portion 29 to receive one end of the handle 17 when it is desired to operate the ratchet mechanism 19.
in operation, the frame 1 is disposed over the rail G with the flanged wheels 1 in en-y gagement with one side of the rail and with the wheel 21 in engagement with the other side of said rail, and by turning the feed screw 13, the desired pressure or tension may of the wheel 21 which causes the frame to move along the rail without releasing the tension on the block 9.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that a rail bender has been provided which may be easily and quickly applied to a rail and the desired pressure placed on the rail in a convenient manner to bring about the desired bending of the rail and also that the device may be moved along the rail from one point to another without releasing' the pressure or tension of the wheel 21 on the rail.
YWhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A rail bender comprising a frame, wheels journaled to said frame and engaging one side of a rail, a head slidably mounted on said frame, a rail bending wheel j ournaled to said head and engaging the rail upon an opposite side from that engaged by the first named wheels, means for adjusting the head, gear teeth formed on the second named wheel, a pinion carried by said head and in mesh with the teeth of the second named wheel, and a ratchet mechanism for rotating said pinion.
2. A rail bender comprising a triangular shaped frame, lianged wheels journaled to said frame, spaced guide bars carried by said frame, a head slidably mounted on said guide bars, a grooved rail bending wheel ournaled to said head and engaging the rail, counter-l sunk teeth formed on one face of said rail bendingV wheel, a pinion carried by said head and in mesh with the teeth, a forked'member pivotally mounted on the head, a spring actuated dog carried byv said forked member and adapted to engage the pinion, a handle removably secured to the forked member, a feed screw carried by the frame and connected to the head, an apertured head carried by the feed screw and adapted to receive the handle for adjusting the lirstnamed head towards and from the rail.
3. A rail bender comprising a frame adapted to engage one side of a rail, a head mounted on the frame and adjustable to wards and from the rail, a circular element carried by. the head and contacting with the rail and having circularly arranged teeth. and a pawl and ratchet mechanism carried by the head and engaging the teeth to rotate the circular element.
