SCRAPER.
APPLICATION mzu JUNE 13. 1919.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JENS W. NIELSEN AND CHRISTIAN H. HANSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AND THORVALD CHRISTOFFERSEN, OF SOUTH BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
Application filed June 13, 1919. Serial No. 304,047.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JnNs IV. Nrnrisnn and CHRISTIAN I-I. HANSEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and THORVALD CHRISTOFFERSEN, also a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scrapers and its chief object is to provide a scraper having a shank adapted to releasably retain any one of a variety of forms of scraper blades thus, in effect, combining in one tool, scrapers adapted for several allied kinds of work. A further object is to provide a scraper that is cheap to manufacture, readily assembled, and that is efiicient in operation. A further object is to provide a scraper having removable blades that, in op eration, are retained firmly in position with all possibility of lateral play eliminated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which- Fig. 1 is a view of my improved scraper in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the blade looking toward the end of the shank.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blade shown in Fig. 1.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the handle provided with the hollow shank 2 that is formed at its free end with a pair of oppositely disposed longitudinal slots 3 that terminate in the slightly enlarged portions 4.
The blade 5 is adapted for engagement with the slotted end of the shank 2 and is formed with the rounded cutting edge 6 and with the lateral lips 7 bent up from the blade body. The space between the lips 7 is substantially equlvalent to the outside diameter of the shank at its slotted end so that when the lipped end of the blade is manually forced into the slotted end of the shank the lips engage with the shank end and prevent lateral movement of the blade. The body portion of the blade is slightly bent at the point 8 so that the slotted end of the shank will be caused to frictionally grip the blade, to hold it firmly, and to have a bearing upon each side of the blade longitudinally thereof and contiguous to the lips 7.
lVhat is claimed is In a scraper, a unitary shank terminating at one end in a handle and having its free end slotted longitudinally, and a blade having lateral portions in continuation of the outer portion of the blade and bent at right angles thereto to form lips, said blade being adapted for insertion in the slotted end of said shank with said lips closely engaging the eriphery thereof, the bent portions of said blade between the outer portion and the lips being curved to cause its frictional engagement by the slotted end of said shank when said blade is in operative position in said shank.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
