OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
oIerAMifrtrr:A CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Paitented Man y14, 1922.
Application filed January 17, 1921. Serial No. 437,668.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, DAvin H. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewood, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements inV Cigarette Cases, of which the following vis a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigarette cases and the primary object thereof is to provide a cigarette case which has novel means for ejecting or lifting the cigarettes above the upper end of the case upon opening thereof, to thus facilitate the removal of the cigarettes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined closure and ejector, which may be made as a unit or integral, and to also providea novel and simple form of latch for the closure.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a combined closure, bottom and ejector, all combined in a unitary structure, or integral, and to further provide a latch which involves no moving parts.
The invention also aims to provide a simple and economical structure; to avoid moving parts or ones likely to be deranged or rendered unserviceable, and to generally improve the eliciency and reduce the number of parts required to a minimum.
Still further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
ln the drawings:
Fig. l, is a side elevation, showing the case in ejecting position;
Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional View, with the parts in closed position;
Fig. 3, is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4, is a similar view on line l--4 of Fig. 2.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a case l. is employed closed at its twosides and two ends, but open at both its top Yand its bottom. A slot Y 2, is formed in one end adjacent the bottom of the case and receives an offset part 3, formed in an approximately U-shaped combined ejector, bottom and top or closure member.
This combined member has a bottom forming end 4; a side part 5, disposed within the body of the case and located below the offset, and a side parto, located outside of or exteriorly of an Vend ofthe case and l disposed above the offset 4, and inally a closure forming end 7, which overlies the to end of the body. By referring to Fig. 2, .it will be thus seen, that the combined member forms abottom, and a top for the body, which is of unitary character, and that by virtue of the offset, a hinge mounting is provided for the member.
ln order to latch the member in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, a bar-like piece S, is suitably secured in the top angle of the member and is designed to snap over the top edge of the adjacent end Wall 9, of the case. Preferably, the parts are formed of Celluloid, though other material can be used, and when made of this pre` ferred material, the bar forming the latch is cemented in the angle as depicted in the drawings.
From the foregoing, it Will be seen that upon opening of the member, the cigarettes which rest at their lower ends on the end 4, will be raised or lifted to expose their upper ends above the top of the case to thus facilitate their removal, and that upon closing of the member, the cigarettes will gravitate back into the case. The entire structure involves but tWo parts, namely the case or body, and the unitary member, thus providing maximum simplicity as is apparent. Further, by virtue of the member extending through the slot 2, and being disposed in part Within and without the case, the member is precluded from having any movement except the required hinging movement thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a cigarette case, a body closed on both sides and ends and open at its top and bottom and having a slot in one end adjacent the bottom, and a combined ejector, closure forming and bottom forming member of substantially U-formation, having an offsetrextending through the slot, being disposed outside of the body, one of the ends of said member forming the bottom and the other end the top for said. body.
2. In a cigarette case, a body open at its top and bottom, a member forming a closure for the top and a bottom for the body, and
means to mount the member for pivotal movement so thatupon movement the top willmove away from the body"y andthe bote tom will move up into the body to thereby raise the cigarettesV above the top vof the body.
vtop and bottom, and a unitary member vhinged to the body andtorming a top there'- or and a bottom whereby upon opening of Y .the member thel topl will Imove away from the bodyand'thebottom will move up into thebody. Y
In-av cigarette ease, a bodyopen at its topan'dbottom', and a U-shaped unitaryV member hinged to the body and forming` a top` therefor and a bottom whereby upon In al cigarette case, a body open :1t-its-y opening` of the member the top will move .away trom the body and-the bottomv will move up intoY the bo'dy.
5. In a cigarette oase, a body open at its top and'bottom, a Ushaped member hinged tothe body and forming a top and a bottom
