Michigam'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Level Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
An important object of this invention to provide novel means whereby the oillevel cock on an internal'combustion engine may be readily opened from the dash board of the vehicle in which the internal combustion engine is arranged.
Further, the invention aims to provide an attachment of the class described capable of being applied to a motor vehicle either during the course ofmanufacture or at any time thereafter without altering the construction of the vehicle.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In. the drawing the numeral 5 designates an internal combustion engine of the type employed in the Ford automobile and which is provided with a transmission housing 6 having a detachable portion constituting a cover 7. The upper portion of the transmission housing and the lower portion of the cover 7 are provided with laterally projecting flanges 8 detachably connected in the usual manner by bolts 9.
As is well known, upper and lower cocks 10 and 11 respectively are threaded into the transmissionand are'provided with valves having heads 12 by means of which the valves may be rotated for opening the cooks.

periodically opened so that the level of the oil in the engine will be indicated by flowing out of one or both of thecocks. It isordinarily a source of much inconvenience to the vehicle operator to be required to. get beneath the car to operate the cocks 10 and 11 and we have therefore provided means whereby the upper cock 10 which is the principal oil level indicating medium may be opened and closed from the dash board. An operating rod generally designated by the numeral 16 is bent intermediate its ends to form long and short branches 17 and 18 respectively. 7
The long branch 17 is rotatably extended through a bearing plate 20 attached to the transmission housing by means of one of the bolts 9. In attaching the bearing plate 20 it is merely necessary to remove one of the bolts 9 and subsequently extend the bolt through the bearing plate and the flanges 8.
The short branch 18 of the operating rod 16 is provided with a depending terminal portion 21 rotatably extended through an eye 24 formed at the forward end of a link 25. The link when applied is inclined downwardly toward its forward end and extended through the dashboard 26 and a bearing plate 27 attached to the dash board. Stop elements 28 in the nature of cotter keys are extended through the link 25 on opposite sides of the dash and serve to limit the endwise movement of the link whereby the rota tion of the valve of the cock 10 is limited. The rear terminal portion of the link 25 is extended laterally to define a handle 30 by means of which the link 30 may be drawn either forwardly or rearwardly.
As illustrated in Figures 3 and 4t, the lower end of the branch 17 is formed with a socket 32 having spaced sides 33 with which the head 12 is engaged. The side walls 33 are provided adjacent their ends with incisions 34: which define fingers 36, the said fingers being bent inwardly to engage the under sides of the head 12 whereby to hold the socket 32 in engagement with the head.
In operation the device is applied in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 and when it is desired to open the cook 10 it is merely necessary to draw the link 25 rearwardly whereupon the operating rod 16 will be rostop elements 28 limit the endwise movement of the link 25 so that the rotation of. the
valve inthe cock l0 is limited. The stop elements 28 also serve as a means for holding the link 25 in position.
As the link 25' is inclined downwardly toward the laterally projecting branch 16 the branches being formed with a socket adapted for connection with the .oil indi. catlng cock of an internal combustlon engine, a l nk connected to the-otherbranch,
and means associated with said link to limit the endwise movement of the same.

The combination withan internal combustion engine having an oil level indicating cock, of a rod having a bend defining upper and lower branches, the lower branch being formed with a socket having connection with said cock, and a link connected to the upper branch of said rod, said link being provided with spaced stop elements limiting its endwise movement and with a latnormally held in its closed position.
