Description
.H. E. HAGMUELLER.
BENCH VISE.
APPLICATION FILED Aue.\7.1921.
1,405,840. Patented Feb. 7, 1922.
/] TTOR/VE Y HERBERT E. HAGMTIELLER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Janitor: VISE.
Application filed August 17,1921. Serial No. 492,902,
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, HERBERT E. HAG- MUELLER, a citizen of the Republicof Germany, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench Vises, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a quick working vise of simplified construction in which a movable jaw may be slid to any desired position within the limits of the vise and then looked positively and released by a slight turn of the hand.
With this and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing in which similar references denote corresponding parts Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved vise; Fig. 2 a cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a perspective view of one of the clamping members.
Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes the stationary jaw adapted to be fixed to a bench B or the like, 11 denotes the movable jaw formed as usually with the stock portion 11' slidably engaging the stationary jaw 10. Fixed to or formed integrally with the stationary aw is a strain block 12 provided with a. longitudinal threaded bore in which works a clamping screw 13. The latter is provided centrally with a square bore 13 and at its ends with inwardly tapering conical grooves having oppositely running threads the pitch of which is somewhat larger than that of the thread of the clamping screw 13. The movable jaw 11 is formed with a cylindrical bore 11 in which is rotatively borne the cylindrical portion 14' of a clamping bolt 14 of square cross section. The square portion is adapted to extend throu h the bore of the screw 13 and to slidably t therein. Loosely borne on the fiat faces of the square bolt 14 are also two sets of tapered clamping members 17 ,18 having oppositely running threads and adapted" to work in the conical grooves of the clamping screw 13. The end of the clamping bolt 14 that extends outwardly from the movable jaw is formed with the usual ear 14 to receive the rod or handle (not shown). By means of collars 15, 16-the clamping bolt 14 is connected to the movable jaw so that the former when moved longitudinally will,
carry with it the'movable jaw.
The mode of operation is as follows: Assuming that the jaws are separated the work is placed between them and the mov- Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented '7 1922;
work, the bolt being free to slide through the clamping screw 18. Now by giving the bolt 14 a short turn the members 17, 18' and the clamping screw will be operated, the former feeding 1nto the grooves 13 13 faster than the feed of the screw 13 in the strain block 12, as a result of which the screw 13 will become clamped to the bolt 14 and as it feeds in the strain block it will carry the clamping bolt along and thereby draw'the jaw 11 tightly against the work. A short turn of the bolt 14 in the opposite direction will cause the members 17 18 to feed outwardly from the grooves releasing thereby the bolt 14 so that the jaw can be drawn away from the work.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a vise, a stationary jaw formed with an internally threaded strain block, a movable jaw, a square bat rotatively borne in and connected to said movable jaw, a clamping screw working in said strain block and having a central square bore to slidably enlarger pitch than that of the thread of the clamplng screw, so that by rotating said bolt the two sets of members will be fed somewhat faster than the feed of the said clamping screw in said strain block.
2. A vise, comprising a stationary jaw having an inwardly threaded strain block, a movable jaw, a bolt rotatively borne 1n and connected to said movable jaw, aclamp-- ing screw working in the thread of said strain block and slidably fitted on said bolt, said screw having threaded conical grooves in its end faces and threaded clamping members slidably mounted on said boltv and adapted to work in said grooves so that by turnin the bolt in one direction said members will be fed into the grooves and clamp said bolt to the clamping screw and, in the opposite direction will feed outwardly and release said bolt.
3. A vise, comprisin having a threaded straln block, a movable jaw, a clamping screw working in said th'readed blockend having threaded Conical grooves, a bolt carried b said movable jaw and slidably extending t rough said clamping screw, and conical threaded clamping members s'li'dably borne on said bolt and adapted to work in said grooves, the threads a stationary Signed at New York-this l5th idayof August, 1921.
