Be it known that I, CLEM S. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented new and use ful improvements in Casing-Heads, of which the following is a specification. L y
, rlihis invention relates to attachments for the casings of oil, gas, or other wells, and has for itsv object the provision of a head adapted to be secured upon the upper end lof a well casing and provided with4 wedge actuated clamping means for holding a pipe or tubing within the headand casing', whether the tubing be desired for the purpose of pumping and to inclose digger rods, whether swabbing is desired, or whether the tubing be desired as a housing for drill.

An important object is the provision` of a device of this character including a separable clamping member adapted to grip the Apipe Aor tube and wedged into engagei'nentv with the pipe or tube by the weight of the latter, the clamping member having inclined sides and engaging within an inclined bore- I. in the head.
-An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which may be quickly and easily applied and which is conf, sequently a great time and labor saver, which will remain rmly in position until positively disengaged, which will be very eilicient in yits holding action, durable in service, and. a general improvement' in the art. 7
With theabove and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consistsin the :details of construction to be hereinafter and B designates tubing. Inv out my invention I provide a member 10 which is hollow and which is internally threaded .at its lower end to be screwed uponthe upper end of the casing A. Adjacent its end portlon the body 10 is formed with a flange 11 engaging upon the top of the casing A. At lts upper end the body 10 isv formed with a cylindrical recess 12 providin an upstand` ing ange 13 and this recess eads into the bore 14e of the body, this bore havin' its upper end tapered, as shown at ,15. he body is formed at .diametrically opposite points with threaded holes 16. The purpose of the bore '14 is to'p'ermit the passage of the tub.

The sections 17 are provided at their tops with handles 20 whereb they may be lifted out oithe body 10. hese sections 17 are adapted to be placed in embracing'engagment upon the tubing B and to. it within t e vtapered por# tion 15 ofthe bore so that the engagement of the inclined wall of the bore portion 15 will force. the members 17 inwardly into clamping engagement with the tubing. After the parts are thus arranged'the'weight ot the tubing pulling upon the sections 17 will tend to move them downwardly and conse.- quently exert a still greater clamping action. After the sections 17. are in place within the boreportion 15 the washer 21 is placed over them within the recess 12 and on top of this washer is placedra second washer 22 which is'engaged and held in place by a plurality lot screws or bolts 23 which are threaded through the flange 13 and which engages over the top of the washer 22. As illustratedin Figs. 1 and 3, the upper face of the ring or washerA 22 is beveled and the ends of the? set screws 23 are beveled and afford a wedging action upon adjusting of 'these screws. This wedging action betweenythe screws and the ring or washer 22 forces the clamping element 17 downwardly into more positive engagement with the well tbing. The purpose of this arrangement is to prevent upward displacement of the sections 17 from any cause and consequent loosening of the other grip upon the tubing.

Vor' the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply con-V structed and consequently inexpensive easing head which is so constructed that it will positively grip vtubing and Vhold the latter Vfirmly in position Within the casing so as t0` prevent any possible dlsplacement regardless of the operations Within the tubing.

Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. A Well casing head comprising a cylindrical body having a longitudinal bore, the
upper end of which is truste-conical, coact ing tapered gripping elements arranged in the rusto-conical end of the bore and providedvvith `Serrations on their inner faces adapted to engage a well tube passing longitudinally through the casing head, an upstanding ange on the upper end of the casing head, a ring engaging the ends of the clamping elements and having its upper face beveled, and set screws carried by the flange and havingtheir inner ends beveled and adapted to engage the beveled surface of the ring whereby to force the ring doWn- Ward1y against the clamping elements to A force the latter downwardly into positive. While I have shown and described the preerred embodiment of my invention, it is of engagement with the well tubing.
2; A Well casing head comprising a cylindrical body having a longitudinal bore, the upper end of Whlch is frusto-,conicah coacting tapered gripping elements arranged in the frusto-conioal end of the bore and adapted to engage a Well tube passing longitudinally through the casing head, a ychamber above the truste-conical end of the bore into which the upper ends o f the clamping elements extend, al member 1n the chamber bngaging the -upper ends of the clamping elements, and means 1n theI chamber for forcin the member downwardly against the clamping elements whereby to force the latter into positive engagement with the Well tubing.
