To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, HAROLD J. BRADT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, havepinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Wheels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to disk wheels for motor vehicles and my invention aims to provide a wheel body that may be built about a well known type of automobile hub, the wheel body being made of metal in contradistinction to wood and wire spokes.
My invention further aims to furnish a disk wheel with a demountable rim, which may be quickly attached to the disk body of the wheel and as readily detached. The holding means for the demountable rim is such as to positively clamp the rim on the disk so that it cannot become laterally displaced nor creep circumferentially of the disk.
My invention further aims to provide a disk wheel having a demountable rim wherein the periphery of the disk is expansible by the rim fastening means to cause the periphery of the disk to bind against the rim and attain a double clamping action of the wheel body relative to the demountable rim. l
A further object of my invention is to provide a demountable and quick detachable rim for a disk wheel and the devices em ployed for holding the wheel disk body and rim are free from injury by the ordinary use, durable and highly eilicient as a rim fastening means.
The construction entering into my wheel hub will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of the inner side of the disk wheel devoid of a tire;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the outer side of the disk wheel;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectional viewiof the disl-` wheel devoid of a tire;
Fig. Fi is a plan of the inner wall of a portion 'if the disk wheel;
Figs. i and 7 are views, in elevation` of modified forms of disk wheels; and
Fig. 8 is an enlar ed cross sectional view taken on the line Vgn-VIII of Fig. 6.
In the drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes an ordinary and well known type of hub having a peripheral flange 2 which ordinarilfy assists in supporting the wooden spokes o awheel, but I use this [lange for holding a disk body 3 having a central opening 4 to receive the hub 1. The disk body 3, adjacent the opening 4, has a series of pressed out apertured bosses 5 extending into recesses 6 which I rovide therefor in the inner face of the ange 2. Mounted on the hub 1 is a retaining plate 7 and the wall of the disk is sandwiched between said plate and the flange 2. The retaining plate 7 is apertured and extending through the apertures, the bosses 5, 'and apertures of the flange 2 are bolts 8 provided with nuts 9, said bolts and nuts clamping the disk body between the retaining plate 7 and the flange 2. The pressed out bosses 5 will cooperate with the flange 2 in supporting the disk body relative to the hub 1, and the disk body obtains a more firm purchase between the retaining plate and the flange by reason of the bosses.
The central part of the disk body 3 is disl'ied, as at 10 to receive the flange 2 and said body is disposed at an angle intersecting the vertical plane of rotation of the wheel. The outer or marginal edges of the disk body are curved to present a vertical wall 1l: reamed to afford an annular shoulder 12'. and stamped to provide a peripheral flange 1; r inner rim 13. Considering the disk imdv in cross section, the peripheral Harm l is disposed at a right angle to the wall 11. with the shoulder 12 at the juncture of said flange with the wall. Connected to the wedge ring 17 are a `plurality of bolts 19 having threaded ends extending through openings 20`in the wall 11, and on said bolts are retaining washers 21 and nuts 22. The retaining washers 21 are adapted to overlie the outer wall of the rib 16 and retain said rib on the shoulder 12. In order that the rim 15 may be quickly removed from the disk body, without completely removing the nuts 22 and the washers 21, said washers have facets 23 which ma be turned into parallel registration with t e shoulder 12, and thus permit of the rim 15 being ull edgggu twardly olf of the shoulder 12.

In some instances, I may use short bolts 29 and nuts 30 for holding the retaining washers 21 relative to the wall 11, as shown in Fi 8, and instead of using the wedge ring 1 I may place an expansible band or ring 30 against the inner wall of the flange 13 and expand or contract the band or ring, either by a'turn-buckle 32 as shown `in Fig. 6 or by a leverage devi 33, as shown in incasso Fig. 7. The expansible band or ring may have a portion thereof anchored relative to the flan e 13, as at'34, so that the band or ring wil at all times be in engagement with the disk body for expanding the flange 13 of said body against the inner wall of the rim 15.
It is thought that the manner of mounting and dismounting the rim relative to the disk body will be apparent without further description, and w 'le in the drawings, there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

In a wheel having a body and a demountable rim, the body of the wheel having a configuration permitting of-it being distended to clamp the rim on the body, complemental means circumferentially of the rim or wheel body preventing lateral shifting of the rim in one direction relative to the wheel body, and means extending transversely of the wheel body and engaging said complemental means at intervals ada ted to simultaneously cause said body to distended against the rim and prevent lateral shifting of the rim in an opposite direction relative to the wheel body.
