PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES ADELAlR-D DELISLE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
OIL-BAFFLING DEVICE.
Application filed May 21, 1923. Serial No. 640,616.
I specification.
This invention relates to improvements in oil baffling devices articularly adapted for use on internal combustionengines, and designed to be located between the cylinder of the engine and the spark plug.
In internal combustion engines oil is frequently drawn into the cylinder during the reciprocation ofthe piston and such oil is frequently deposited on the spark plug and interferes with the proper functioning and well working thereof. 4
Among the objects of the present invention one of the principles is to provide an adapter for use with the spark-plug so that any oil in the cylinder will be arrested before reaching the spark plug and will be burned off in the cylinder thereby insuring the spark plug being kept clean and thus able to perform its functions at all times.
Other objects are to rendermy oil bafliing device or adapter simple in construction with the several parts easily accessible for inspection, and capable of being used on all types of internal combustion engines at present in use, to so construct the adapter that it is strong and durable and not liable to go out of repair, and topermit of its being assembled on an internal combusti0n engine with a minimum of time andlabour.
With the above and other objects in view which will be made clear as the specification proceeds my invention resides in the improved construction and arrangement of parts particularly described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompan ing drawings and set forth in the appen ed claim.
While I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction disclosed but reserve the. right to modify such construction within the scope of my appended claim.
Fig. 2 isa vertical section of the same. Q
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower end of my oil baffling device or adapter.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of an alternative form of my invention.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the same but ilzaken at a different plane to that shown in Fig. 6 is a plan view of the lower end of this alternative form of my invention.
Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the Archimedes screw utilized in my oil baflling device or adapter.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures. 1 Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figures 1 to 3 and my invention consists of the adapter 1 which is formed of metal and provided intermediate of its length with a suitable shoulder below which the exterior of the adapter is threaded as shown at 2, while the extreme lower end is reduced and provided with a plurality of orifices 4, the object of which will be made clear hereafter.
The upper portion of my adapter is formed like a nut as illustrated at 1 to permit of the adapter being engagedby a spanner and so tightened into position on an engine cylinder.
The upper end of thb adapter is internally threaded as shown at 5 to engage the lower threaded end of a spark plug.
The bore is reduced towards and provided with a shoulder adjacent to the orifices 4: and an Archimedes screw 10 is housed within this board and formed with an extension or lug which is provided with an orifice 10 designed to be engaged by a cotter pin 3 which passes through the lower end of my adapter and so secures the said screw in position.
By reducing the lower end of my adapter ample clearance is provided for the cotter pin 3.
Referring now to that form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 to 6 the only difference existing with the above "described figures is that the lower screw threaded portion 8 is tapered and the upper internally screw threaded portion 9 is also tapered.
The exterior of the adapter is otherwise the same having a nut like portion 7 adapted to be engaged by a spanner.
the lower end When my adapter is in use the spark plug is threaded into the upper end of the e adapter at 5 or 9 while the lower end of the adapter makes threaded engagement at 2 or 8 with the internal combustion engine.
The oil in the cylinder of the engine tending to enter the bore of the adapter impinges'on the screw 10 and flows down the same and passes through the orifices 4 into the cylinder where it is burned so that the spark plug at all times is kept in a clean condition and is able to perform its required functions. v From" the above description it will be seen that I have invented an oil bafiiing device for i use in internal combustion engines which device is simple in construction and reliable 1 its operations.
- I claim- An oil bafliing device for spark plugs com- 20.
of the shell below the internal threads being 25 smoothly bored to nearly the end of the shell and counter bored of a smaller diameter to the end forming an internal shoulder, said shoulder adapted to support an oil baflie element in the form of an Archimedes screw, said screw having a depending tongue and locking means cooperating with said tongue and the lower end of said shell to secure said screw in position. Signed at Montreal May 3rd, 1923.
