Another object is to produce a device of the character mentioned having wings and a wing-locking device which may be tripped to permit the'wings to collapse when it is desired to remove a garment from the hanger without necessitating the removal of the latter from its support.

lVith the objects. named and other ob jects in view, the invention consists in cer tain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization of partsas hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hanger as it will appear when extended for the support of a garment;

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same:

Figure 3 is a side view of the same; and

Figure 4 is a view similar to that of F igure 3, but illustrates the hanger as it will appear when the wings have been collapsed to permita garment to be removed.

In the drawing where like reference characters identify corresponding parts in all of the Figures, 1 and 2 respectively identify a pair of similar wing members forming the garment support, the inner ends of the member 1 being coiled around the corresponding ends of the member 2 to form a hinge 3.

Each wing at its inner end is bent upwardly to form parallel guides 4:, which terminate in oppositely projecting grip loops 5. The guides 4 are slidingly received within a substantially rectangular-shaped locking cage 6 formed with oppositely-extending ears 7, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear, the grip loops preventing the cage from moving upwardly be yond the guides.

When the loops 5 are in abutment with the cage as shown in Figure 3, the wings 1 and 2 occupy a substantially horizontal position and are suspended from the cage by said loops, and are held against closing movement through the fact that the guides 4c are held confined within the cage.

are a pair of parallel arms 8, the same being bent inwardly at their upper ends and terminatlng in a hook 9 for engagement with any suitable point of suspension, as at 10.

In use the device will be inserted in folded position (see Figure 4), through the neck or collar opening of a garment, buttoned or not, as preferred, and the wings 1 and 2- will then be swung to their substantially 1 horizontal positions. To accomplish this, the grip-loops are gripped between thumb and finger and pressure applied to effect approaching movement thereof and relative upward swinging or receding movement of the wings. In this operation the weight of tor, because the instant the grip-loops start their approaching movement they, with the the garment is not sustained by the operaand the hanger as a whole and the garment thereon, are carried by the support 10. The cage inclosing the guides and too narrow to pass over the grip-loops. thus acts as a suspension point for and locks the wings expanded.

\Vhen it is desired to remove a garment from the hanger, the operator inserts one hand through the neck opening of the collar and by simultaneous pressure applied against the underside of the hinge 8 and down upon the ears 7, lifts the garment and wings I. and 2 toward the cage. As soon as such upward movement begins, the cage permits upward divergence of guides 4, and the wings commence to swing downwardly under the weight of thegarment, and continues such movement until the limit of travel is attained as the hinge abuts the cage 6, the wings by this time having attained the positions shown in Figure 4. The

garment is then permitted to slip from the hanger, as will be readily understood.

It will be apparent that this operation can be carried out with one hand, while the hook 9 is still in engagement with its support 10, or that the same result can be accomplished after the hook is disengaged from its point of support.

In the preferred construction of the device, the arms of each wing, adjacent the hinge point, are outwardly bowed as at 11, to provide abutments wider than the length of the cage, which not only prevent the collar of the garment from engaging the guides at the opposite sides thereof and possibly getting caught between the guides when the latter are closing, but also holds the back of the collar spaced from the guides and out of the path of upward or downward movement of the cage, as indicated by the dotted line in Figure 2, and thus avoids any possi- 'bility of the garment catching on the ears 7 of the cage.

From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a device of the character described, which possesses all of the features of advantage set forth as desirable, and while I have described and claimed the preferred embodiment of the same, it is to be understood that I reserve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A garment hanger comprising a pair of opposi'tely-projecting wings hingedly connected at their inner ends, guide extensions rigid with and disposed angularly to the wings at the hinged ends thereof, suspension means slidably receiving the guide extensions between the upper ends thereof and the wings, and means to prevent the suspension means from sliding 03 the upper ends of the extensions; relative downward move ment of the suspension means on the guide extensions permitting downward folding movement of the wings, and relative upward movement of the suspension means on the guide extensions causing approaching movement of the latter and upward or unfolding movement of the wings.

A garment hanger comprising a pair of oppositely-projecting wings hingedly connected at their inner ends, guide extensions rigid with and extending upwardly from and disposed angularly to the hinged ends of the wings respectively, and provided with lateral projections at their upper ends, and a suspension means slidably receiving the guide extensions between the lateral projections thereof and said wings and limited in relative upward movement on. the guide extensions. by the said projections thereof.

A garment hanger comprising a pair of oppositely-projecting wings hingedly connected at their inner ends, guide extensions rigid with and extending upwardly from and disposed angularly to the hinged ends of the wings respectively, suspension means, a cage at the lower end of the suspension means fitting snugly and slidingly on the guide extensions and limited in downward movement thereon by the wings, and means movable with the guide extensions for limiting upward movement of the cage on said guide extensions.

A garment hanger comprising a pair of oppositelyprojecting wings hingedly connected at their inner ends, guide extensions rigid with and disposed angularly to the wings at the hinged ends thereof, suspension means slidably receiving the guide extensions between the upper ends thereof and the wings, means to prevent the suspension means from sliding off the upper ends of the extensions; relative downward movement of the suspension means on the guide extensions permitting downward folding movement of the wings, and relative upward movement of the suspension means on the guide extensions causing approaching movement of the latter and upward or unfolding movement of the wings; said wings having portions adjacent their hinged point, bowed laterally outward to a width greater than the width of the hinge point.

5. A garment hanger composed of wire and consisting of a pair of wings hinged together at their inner ends and provided with upwardly projecting portions at their hinge point terminating in projections ex tending in opposite directions, and a suspension means comprising a hook, a pair of arms depending from the hook, and a loop or cage at the lower ends of said arms snugly embracing said upwardly projecting portions of the wings; said cage having lateral projections or handles.

6. A garment hanger comprising a pair of loop-shaped wire wings hinged to each other for spreading and collapsing movement, and provided with outwardly-bowed portions near the hinge point, each wing being provided with a pair of upwardlyprojecting arms for standing together vertically or in upwardly-diverging relation accordingly as the wings are spread or collapsed, the said arms being connected attheir upper ends by off-setting portions; and a wire suspension means comprising a hook, a pair of arms depending from the hook, and a loop or cage at the lower ends of said arms snugly embracing said upwardlyprojecting portions of the wings; said cage having lateral projections or handles.
