To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. \VAGKER and FREDERICK Gonnrz, citizens of the Unitcd States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of'New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Boxes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others slrilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates, generally, to improvements in that class ofcases or boxes adapted to contain face-powders, rouges, cosmetics, and the like; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed vanity box or case, comprising a main compartment having a dividing partition providing a chamber or compartment adaptedto contain a face-powder, or the like, and another chamber or compartment in which is slidably or movably disposed a drawer, adapted to contain a compact of pink or red rouge, or the like, the first-mentioned chamber or compartment being adapted to be closed by means of a closing lid or cover connected with the main case or box, when not in use, and the said lid or cover being usually provided with a mirror.

The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel, neat, and simply constructed vanity case or box coinprisii'ig in a general manner the several features hereiirabove stated; and, with the purposes of the invention herein above set forth, and other objects of the invention which will be fully apparent from the following detailed description of the same, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel vanity box or case hereinafter set forth, and the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is atop or plan view of a vanity box or case, made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention; Figure 2 is a similar view of the same, with the lid or cover of the box or case in its opened relation. thereto, and with the drawer of the box or case shown in its withdrawn position, said view showing also in connection therewith fragmentary portions of the contents of the main chamber of the box and of the drawer thereof; and Figure 3 is side elevation of the several parts illustrated in said Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional representation, taken on line l-i in said Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrow 2, with the lid or cover of the box or case represented in its closed position; Fig ure 5 is a horizontal sectional representation of the vanity box or case, said section being taken on line 55 in said Figure 3; and Figure 6 is a horizontal section of the vanity box or case, taken below the dividing part1 tion, and showing the drawer in its closed position within the main body of the box or case.

Figure 7 is a vertical representation of the various devices and parts of the vanity box or case, taken on line 7-'? in Figure 2, with certain parts or members thereof illustrated in removed relation to the main members of the box or case: and Figure 8 is a detail view showing in perspective frag-- mentary portions of the main body of the box or case, and of the drawer thereof.

Figure 9 is a plan view of the drawer, shown in its detached relation from the main body of the box or case; and Figure 10 is a perspective view of a resilient stopineniber or arm employed with the drawer to prevent accidental withdrawal of the drawer entirely from within the main body of thexvanity box or case.

Figure 11 is a plan view of an auxiliary container removably disposed within the drawer; and Figure 12 is a plan view of a frame-piece within the main body of the box or case, serving as a guide for permitting proper movement of the drawer into its closed and opened positions'with relation to the main body of the vanity box or case.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views. to indicate correspondipg parts.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reiterence-character l indicates a complete vanity box or case, showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, the same in the present instance, and as shown in the accompanying drawings, consisting of a main body or shell having a base 2 and cylindrical side-wall 3, to the upper marginal edgeportion of which is connected by means of a hinge, as at 1-, or in any other suitable manner, a suitably constructed lid or cover 5. T he said main body or shell and the said lid or cover'niay be made in any desired form of exterior contour or shape, so as to provide, when closed together, the desired ornamental effect and appearance. As shown in the several figures of the drawings, the said lid or cover 5 is made with anornamental marginal bead, as 6, and an annular flange 7, all arranged to provide an ofi'set for properly seating the lid or cover 5 upon the upper marginal edge surround ing the upper open portion of the said main body or shell, when the lid or cover is closed. Conforming to and suitably fitted upon the base 2 of the main body or shell is a partition-supporting and drawer-guiding frame, comprising a base-plate 8 which is cutaway, as at 9, so as to provide a pair of extensions 10 and 11. As shown the circular edge 12 of the said base-plate 8 is made with upwardly projecting lugs 13, adapted to fit snugly in frictional holding contact with the inner surface of the cylindrical side-wall 3 to properly maintain the said trams-member in its operative position within themain body or shell of the vanity box or case. Projecting upwardly from the marginal edges 14, 15 and "16 which bound the above-mentioned cut away portion 9, are other members 17, 18 and 19, the member 17 extending upwardly from the marginal edge 14, and providing a stop to prevent the drawer from being pushed too far into the main body or shell, and the members 18 and 19 respectively extending upwardly from the respective marginal edges 15 and 16, and providing guides between which the drawer is adapted to be moved. At their extremities, near a drawer-opening 20 in the sidewall 3 of the main body or shell, the said guide- members 18 and 19 are respectively provided with upwardly projecting stoplugs 21 and 22, arranged to prevent the entire withdrawal of the drawer from within the main body or shell, as will presently be more fully described. The drawer, hereinabove mentioned, as will be seen more especially from an inspection of Figure 9 of the drawings, comprises a base 23 provided with an upwardly projecting arc-shaped front wall 24, having a finger-piece, as 25, a pair of side-walls 26, and a connecting rear wall 27, the said drawer, in plan, conformng to the contigiu'ation oi? the cut away portion 9 in the base-plate S of the previ ously mentioned frame-1miniber, so that when the drawer is inserted through the opening 20 in the side-wall 3 of the main body or shell oi? the vanity box or case, it will be snugly litted between the guidemembers 18 and 19 and the stop-meinbcr 17, and will be slid-ably or movably disposed in the said cut away portion 9, as will be clearly evident.

In its side-walls 26, the drawer is preferably formed with longitudinally extending depressions 28, in which are arranged and secured therein, by means of rivets 29, or in any other suitable manner, suitably formed strips or arms which are made of suitable spring-metal, the rear end-portions of the said strips or'arms 30 extending beyond the rear wall 27 of the drawer and each strip or arm being formed with a laterally projecting stop lug 31, as shown in Figures 9 and 10 of the drawings, which lugs are adapted to be brought into contact with the stop- lugs 21 and 22 of the respectiveguide- members 18 and 19, when the drawer is withdrawn, and whereby the entire withdrawal of the drawer from within the main body or shell is impossible.

If desired, a suitably shaped member or element 32, in the form of a pan or dish may be removably fitted in the said drawer, the said pan or dish being adapted to contain a rouge-compact 33, or the like, and the usual pull 3%, or similar member used in the application of the rouge, or the like, to the face.

To provide the main body or shell of the vanity box or case with an upper compartment or chamber, as 35, see Figure 7 of the drawings, a plate 86 fitting snugly in the said body or shell, with its marginal edge in frictional contact with the inner surface of the side-wall 3 of said body or shell, is forced down until it rests upon the several retaining lugs 1 ot the partition-support ing and drawer-gitiding frame, said lugs serving as supports for the partition thus provided, as will be clearly understood. The chamber or compartment, thus provided, serves to receive another compact 37, usually a face-powder. and a powder-putt or othersuitable applying member, as 38.

e are fully aware, that the present invention capable of modifications, and that ltlii lit) some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well asin the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, we do not limit our present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do we confine ourselves to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

We claim 1. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewal, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawer guiding frame-member mountedupon said base, drawer-guides connected with said frame-member, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, and means connected with said guides and with said frame-member for limiting the outward and inward movements of said drawer.

2. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame-member mounted upon said base, drawer-guides connected with said frame-member, a drawer disposed between said guides, and means connected with said guides and with said frame-member for limiting the outward and inward movements of said drawer, combined with a partition-plate disposed within said main shell at a point above the drawer so as to provide an auxiliary receiving chamber.

A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving mpening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame-member upon said base, marginal retaining lugs extending upwardly from said frame-member in frictional retaining contact with the inner surface of said side-wall, drawer-guides connected with. said frame-member, and a drawer movably disposed between said guides.

4. A vanity box comprising a main shell. formed with a base and surrounding side wall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame-member upon said base, marginal retaining. lugs extending upwardly from said frame-member in frictional retaining contact with the inner surface of said side-wall drawer-guides connected with said frame-member, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, and means connected with said guides and with said frame-member for limiting the outward and inward movements of said drawer.

5. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base. and surrounding sidewall,-said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame-member upon said base, marginal retaining lugs extending upwardly from said frame'member in frictional retaining contact with the inner surface of said side-wall, drawer-guides connected with said frame-member, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, combined with a partition-plate marginally in frictional contact with the inner surface of the side-wall of the main shell, said plate resting upon said upwardly extending retaining lugs of said frame-member, so as to provide an auxiliary chamber above said drawer.

6. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a'base and surrounding sidewall. said side-wall being prvoided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame-member upon said base, marginal retaining lugs extending upwardly from said frame-member in frictional retaining contact with the inner surface of said side-wall, dr'awenguides connected with said frame-member, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, and means connected with said guides and with said frame-member for limiting the outward and inward movements of said drawer, combined -with a partition-plate marginally in frictional contact with the inner surface of the side-wall of the main shell, said plate resting upon said upwardly extending retaining lugs of said frame-member, so as to provide an auxiliary chamber above said drawer.

7. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side wall' being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frameanember mounted upon said base, drawer-guides connected with said frame-member. stop-lugs extending from said guides, a drawer movably disposed be tween said' guides, strips secured. on opposite sides of said drawer. and stop-lugs extending from said strips and adapted to be brought into engagement with the stoplugs of said frame-member to limit the outward movement of the drawer.

8. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening-a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame member mounted upon said base, drawer-guides connected with said frame-mei'nber, stop-lugs extending from said guides, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, strips secured on opposite sidesof said drawer, stop-lugs extending from said strips and adapted to be brought into engagement with the stop-lugs of said frame-member to limit the outward movement of the drawer, and another stoplug extending upwardly from said frame member to limit the inward movement of the drawer.

9. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding fran'iemember mounted upon said base. drawer-guides connected with said frame-member, stoplugs extending from said guides, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, strips-secured on opposite sides of said drawer, and stop-lugs extending from said strips and adapted to be brought into engagement with the stop-lugs of said frame-member to limit the outward movement of the drawer, combined with a partition-plate disposed within. said main shell at a point above the drawer so as to provide an auxiliary receiving chamber.

10. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side-wall beingprovided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame-member mounted upon said base, drawer-guides connected with sald frame-member, stop-lugs extending from said guides, a drawer-movably disposed between said guides, strips secured on oppo site sides of said drawer, stop-lugs extend ing from said strips and adapted to be brought into engagen'ient with the stop-lugs of said frame-member to limit theout'ward movement of the drawer, and another stoplug extending upwardly from said framemember to limit the inward movement of the drawer, combined with a partition-plate disposed within said main shell at a point above the drawer so as to provide an auxiliary receiving chamber.

11. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding franie-member mounted upon said base, marginal retaining lugs extending upwardly from said frame-member in frictional retaining contact with the inner surface of said sidewall, drawer-guidesconnected with said frame-member, stop-lugs extending from said guides, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, strips s'e cured on opposite sides of said drawer, and

stop-lugs extending from said strips and adapted to be brought into engagement. with the stop-lugs of said frame-member to limit the outward movement of the drawer.

12. A; vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surroundingsidewall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said sidew'all, a drawerguiding frame-member mounted upon said base, marginal retaining lugs extending upwardly from said frame-member in frictional retaining contact with the inner surface of said side wall, drzuve'r-guides con nected with said fran'le-member, stop-lugs extending from said guides, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, strips secured on opposite sides of said drawer, stop-lugs extending from said strips and adapted to be brought into engagement with the stop-lugs of said frame-member to limit the outward in'ove'mei'it of the drawer, and another stop-lug extending upwardly from said frame-member to limit the inward movement of the drawer.

13. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding sidewall, said side-wall beingprovided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover conneeted with said side-wall, a drawer-guiding frame-member mounted upon said base, marginal retaining lugs extending up wardly from said frame-member in frictional retaining contact with theinner surface of said side-wall, drawerguides connected with said frame-member, stop-lugs extending from said guides, a drawer movably disposed between said guides, strips secured on opposite sides of said drawer, stop-lugs extending from said strips and adapted to be brought into 'engagen'ient with the stop-lugs of said frame-member to limit the outward movement of the drawer, combined with a partition-plate marginally in frictional contact with the inner surface of the side-wall of the main shell, said plate resting upon said upwardly extending retaining lugs of said frame-member, so as to provide an auxiliary chamber above said drawer.

14. A vanity box comprising a main shell formed with a base and surrounding side wall, said side-wall being provided with a drawer-receiving opening, a lid or cover connected with said side-wall, a drawerguiding frame-member mounted upon said base, marginal retaining lugs extending upwardly from said frame-member in frictional retaining contact with the inner surface of said side-wall, drawenguides connected witlrsaid fral'ne-member, stop-lugs extending from said guides, a drawer movably disposed between said'guides, strips secured on opposite sides of said drawer. stoplugs'extendin'g from said strips and adapted CTR to be brought into engagement with the stop-lugs of said frame-member to limit the outward movement of the drawer, and another stop-lug extending upwardly from said frameanember to limit the inward movement of the drawer, combined with a partition-plate marginally in frictional con tact with the inner surface of the side-Wall of the main shell, said plate resting upon 10 said upwardly extending retaining lugs of said frame-member, so as to provide an auxiliary chamber above said drawer.
