A, M. HANSEN CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT Filed Nov. 12, 1921 W ,m g
A TTORNEYS WITNESSES Fatented Apr. 15, 1924.
ALBERT M. HANSEN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CHRISTMAS-TREE ORNAMENT.
Application filed November 12, 1921. Serial No. 514,719.
I '0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. I'IVANSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Christmas-Tree Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a Christmas tree ornament.
The object of the invention is to provide a bulb which is artistic in appearance and not subject to easy breakage.
Other objects will hereinafter appear.
In carrying out the present invention, a glass bulb is blown having extremely thin walls, and of any shape desired. The interior surface of the bulb is coated with tin or a like material which is adapted to form a reinforcement for the bulb against breakage, and also adapted to make exterior surface thereof appear bright and shiny. The exterior surface of the bulb may then be coated with a suitable medium for imparting a fanciful color thereto, which together with the shiny appearance given by the in.- ner coating of tin, provides an artistic ornament. Also I provide means by which a plurality of bulbs may be attached to each other, or individually attached to a tree if desired. 7
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bulb embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same,
Figure 3' is a transverse section of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a glass bulb which "is preferably of the shape shown, and terminating at each end in a neck 11. The interior surface of the bulb 10 is covered with a thin coating of tin or a like material, as indicated at 12. The purpose of the tin coating as be fore stated, is to give the exterior of the bulb a shiny and bright appearance, and also to reinforce its walls against breakage. In
fact, it has been found that indentures as at 13, may be made in the walls of the bulb without the same crumbling.
The exterior surface of the bulb may now be covered with a dye adapted to impart the color desired. A dye is preferably used in that a thin transparent coloring is bad.
For. each neck 11 there is provided a cap closure 14 and each of said caps having formed therewith a ring 15 by which a plurality of bulbs may be connected together or individually connected to a tree, as before stated.
It should be here stated that in coating the interior of a bulb with tin, the following procedure is taken: A bulb is blown from molten glass and provided'with two extensions preferably diametrically opposed, one of these extensions being hollow and open at its free end. The bulb is taken while hot and the extension with the open end is dipped into molten tin and the molten tin is drawn up into the bulb. The bulb is then turned around allowing the tin to cover the inside surface thereof. The bulb is now taken and the closed extension is broken off in order to allow cold air to rush into the bulb and thus forcing the surplus metal or tin from the bulb. It has been found that it requires very little metal to cover the inside of a bulb if treated in the manner prescribed.
I claim 1. A glass bulb of the character described, having its ends terminating in a neck, a coating of tin for the interior surface of the bulb, and attaching means secured to each of said necks.
2. A glass bulb of the character described, having its ends terminating in a neck, a coating of tin for the interior surface of the bulb, and a cap closure for each of said necks, and a ring formed with the head of each cap closure.
8. A glass bulb of the character described, having its interior surface coated with tin, and its exterior surface coated with a transparent coloring medium.
ALBERT M. HANSEN.
