Be it known that I, Leo K. SxArronn, a citizen of the United States. residin at Detroit. in the county of Wayne. and tato of Michigan. have invented new and useful Improvements in .lournal Boxes. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to roller bearings for railway trucks and the present invention is an improvement over that forming the subject. matter of an application filed by me on Sept. 6. 1919. Serial No. 322.027.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide two or more series of rollers between the box and spindle. the. rollers of one series having independent movement in relation to the other rollers so as to reduce the. wear of the rollers and revent`breakage of the parts and make tyie bearing more flexible than it would be, if'a single series of rollers was used.
Another object of the invention is to connect the roller bearing retaining member to the spindle so that it will rotate with the spindle and with the roller cage so as to re-4 duce the wear and friction between said member and the cage.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the parts may have a certain amount of movement. in a vertical planevso as to compensate for the tilting movement of the axle due to uneven parts of the track.
This invention also consists in certain other features otconstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hexeinaftcr fully described, il lustrated in the accompanying drawings and s ecitically pointed ont. in the appended c aims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through a boxing and spindle showing the manner of carrying out my invention.

Referring to Figures l to inclusive. the boxing is indicated at l and this boxing is located between the upper and lower projections 2, of the truck. which are connected together h v the bolts 3 which carry the spacing sleeves 4. the boxing being arranged between said bolts. The top of the boxing is provided with the concave recess 5 which rcceives the semiwircnlar member 6 carried by the upper member of the truck. As will be seen the bottom piece of the truck is spaced from the bottom of the boxing so that said boxing may have vertical play to permit a rocking movement. This rocking movement being limited b v the lugs 7 formed on the sides of the boxing and engaging with the bolts or their sleeves.

A case hardened tube tl is placed on the spindle l2 of the axle and this tube is also provided with a rib 13 engaging a groove 14 in the spindle to prevent turning of the tube on said spindle. As shown in Figure Il the tube extends through the wheel and is provided with an offset portion l5 which forms a shoulder which engages the shoulder t6 0n the spindle.
The rollers 17 are. carried by the rings i8 and these rings are connected together b v the rods 19. As shown I use two series of rollers, cach series being carried by a pair of rin with the middle rings in contact with eac other. Each roller has its ends rounded ns at 2O so as to allow for the tilting movement of the axle in the boxing when the car is passing over uneven portions of the track. The rings may be provided with the nip- -ples shown in the before mentioned application and engaging the conical openings 21 in the ends of the rollers.
The roller ca e is retained in position between t-he case lgiardened tubes by means of the retaining member 22 which is made in the form of a cap for Flttin over the end of the spindle. This mernier has screw threaded engagement, with the end of the tube 11 and is bolted to the end of the spinelle by the bolts 23. In this way the retaining member rotates with the `spindle and the cage so as to reduve wear of thv said member and the outer ring ofthe rage. It will thus be seen that when thv rar is passing over uneven portions of thv travk or over loose joints of,the rails where the aXl'e will be tilted this movement will be compensated for h v the vertival play between the parts so that therollers will not be wedged ltetween thv tulivs and thus suhjeeted to great wear.
