SPRING CATCH FOR VAEITY BOXES.
Application filed March 27, .1923. Serial No. 627,956.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY I. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaterbur county of New Haven and State of onnecticut, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Spring Catches for Vanity Boxes, fully described and represented in the following specifica-' boxes shall provide an attractive appearance,
which is a prime commercial requisite, the bottom is formed with an inset flange with which the cover, also provided with a flange, has telescopic engagement so that when the parts are closed the cover flange and the bottom flange meet snugly and an attractive appearing structure is produced.
These boxes thus formed have heretofore been provided with an ordinary knob catch so for holding the parts in closed position, this catch comprising a small projection on one of the parts engaging with an indentation on the other. These catches have, however, been somewhat unsatisfactory in that they do not positively secure the parts in closed position. It is a particular object of the present invention to provide a spring catch of improved construction-wh ch shal positively hold the parts together so that they can not'be separated until the spring has been released, this spring catch being of such construction that the parts are concealed except for the means for loosening the 5 ring and which at the same time permit t e cover and the bottom to have telescopic engagement with each other.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a sprin" catch of simple and convenient form which Ina be easily assembled with the other parts 0 the box and which shall be durable and effective in use.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists of certain novel parts, combinations and arrangements whic will be described curely locking these parts together, the parts in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features-thereof. pointed out in the claims liereunttnannexcdr Referring now to thesef drawings- Figure 1 is a central vertical. section, of the box withimproved catch attached, theview being partly broken away and the 'box being shown closed.
Figure 3 is a plan view looking in the direction of the arrow 3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale, the view being taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view. on an enlarged scale, the section being taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
/-Referring now to these drawings, the box includes a bottom member 1, having upstanding peripheral wall 2. This peripheral wall is inset to form a flange 3,. the inset also forming an exterior shoulder 4. Pivot-' ally associated with this bottom member 1 on a hinge 5 is a cover 6, this cover having a downwardly extending peripheral wall 7. This wall 7 of the cover has a telescopic en-- gagement with the flange 3 when the parts are in closed position, the lower edge of the wall 7 seating against the shoulder 4, this construction providing a box of very neat attractive appearance.
In accordance with the present invention an improved spring lock is provided for sebeing arranged so that the locking is efiected between the cover and the inset flange, no part of the spring lock being visible when the box is closed except the spring release hereinafter referred to.
In the construction shown the flange 3 is provided with a slot 8, and secured in the cover-in any suitable manner, as by rivets 9 is a spring arm 10, this spring arm being secured at one end. The free end of this 100.
arm is provided with a wing 12, this wing carrying a locking projection 13 which may be conveniently formed by indenting the wing. Extending outwardly from the free end of the arm is a release 14, this release passing through a slot'15 inthe flange 7 of the top, before referred to.
In the operation of the device, when the box is being locked the flange 3 passesbetween the projection 13 and the inner side no of the wall 7, the spring am being forced inward until such time as the slot 8 arrives in line with the projection 13, whereupon the projection snaps into the slot and the parts are securely locked into position and side of the box when closed except the release member 14. While the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form it will be understood that certain chan es and variations may be made in the speci '0 structure disclosed without depart in from the invention. Vhat I claim is.
1. In a box of the character described, the combination with a bottom having a peripheral wall, a cover having a peripheral wall, one of these parts being inset to form a flange with which the other has telescopic engagement, a slot in the flange, a spring arm having a projection engaging the slot when the parts are closed, and a release operable fromwithout the box for releasing the projection.
2. In a box of the character described, the combination of a bottom member having a peripheral wall inset near its top to form a flange, a cover pivotally associated with the bottom and having a peripheral wall having telescopic engagement with the flange, a .slot in the flange, a spring arm secured at one end inside the cover, a wing on the free end of the arm having aprojection engaging with the slot, and a release on the arm extending through an aperture in the cover wall and operable from without the box for releasing the projection.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand..
HARRY I. PHILLIPS.
