- rick, such as that of an oil well, for supporting the tackle for boring orhoisting or lowering, and while primarily adapted for use in conjunction with the framework of a steel derrick, it will be obvious that my improved coupling maybe employed for anypurposes wherein it is found to be'applicable. 1
Important objects of the invention are to provide a substantial coupling unit for se-.
curing the adjacent ends of steel derrick frame-work members, which will facilitate the erection and dismantling of such derrick structures, and which includes novel means 7 for maintaining the coupling in condition for convenient detachment.
Further objects of this invention are to provide a device of the character described, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efficient in itsuse, positive in its action, and comparatively'inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplishment of theseand such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the
v invention consists of the-novel construction',
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafterspecifica'lly described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, vari ations," and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views 5 j v Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved coupling, illustrating the attachment of conjoining derrick structure members therewith.
Figure 2 is alongitudinalsectionalfview" of the coupling on'line IIII Figure-'3,
F1gure'3 is 'a top plan viewbf'thecouplingL v Figure 4 is a perspective view of amodi fied form'of-"coupling; Figure 5 is avertic'al sectionah view on line V- -FV, Figure l. T "Figure 6 is-a verticalsectional view o f another modification of the coupling; lleferring indet'ail to thedrawing 1 denotes the body portion of the preferred form 01"" coupl ng which consists-ofan integral steel casting. The body;port i'on. '1-is cylindrical in contour andis fOrmedWith an upper bore 2-and a lower bore 3. The bores 2 and 3 are separated from each other by'the centrally disposed seat m'e nber fl which extends around the'periphery of the bore intermediate ofboresQ-and 3i The marginal edges of the upper aha" lower "faces of the {seat member 4,-adjoining the peripheries ofresp'ective boresQ and 8, are formed to provide recessed air cular finished seats'5 and 6, respectively.
The seats 5 and "6 are adapted for the reception ofthe adjacent ends .ofjthe r'espec-' tive leg members7 and 8, which 'latterconstitutea portion of the framework of the derrick structure and are made from tubing or pipe permitting oftheir engagement in the recessed seats?) and 6." I
The faces'of the upper and lower bores 2 and 3 are eachprovi'ded'with a' plurality of vertically extending ribs; 9 having lfinished faces adapted to frictionally engage the outer face of the leg members 7, 8,when the latter are mounted inposition-in respective bores 2 and'3and seats 5 and-6. Each of the ribs 9 increases in width from its iiiner to its outer end. i f It will herebe noted that the construction of the body portion- 1' providing; the machined rib faces andcseats 5'and 6,willz establish an accurate, substantial, and rigid union between conjoinin'g leg members 7 e and 8, The provision ofithe ribs 9 will not only provide for the economicmanufacture ofthe couplingi'but will also facilitateithe assembly -or detachment of the associated members 7 and 8 by reducing their frictional engagement, inrespective bores 2. and 3, to' a" nnmmum. Further the periphery ofv the bores 2 and 3 between adjacent verticaliribs V 9 provide clearances-1O wh ichare utilized for storing a cheap heavy lubricant to prevent corrosion of the-connections and to further facilitate the erection or dismantling of the derrick structure. The varying width of the ribs 9 will serve to confine the lubricant in the clearances 10.
Formed integral with the periphery of the body portion 1 is a pair of longitudi: nally extending and laterally disposed flanges 11, 12, one of said flanges being positioned at right angles relatively to the other. Each of the flanges 11, 1.2, is provided with three aligned apertures 13, 14-, and 15, respectively. The center apertures 1 of the flanges 11, 12, are utilized for securing the horizontal girts 16 to respective flanges 11 12, and the end apertures 13 and.15 are utilized for securing the diagonally disposed brace members 17 to respective flanges 11 and 12. The flange apertures 13, 14 and 15 are elongated for the reception of bolts 18, commonly known to the trade as track bolts having shoulders conforming to the contour of the elongated flange apertures 13, 14 and 15. Each of the bolts 18 is provided with securing nut 19 of the usual construction and the adjustment or removal of the latter is facilitated as the engageinent of the bolts 18 in elongated flange apertures 13, 14c and 15 is fixed to prevent its rotation. Such construction is essential as the rig builder is usually employed in hazardous positions on derrick construction, supporting himself with the aid of one hand while adjusting the nut 19 upon the bolts 18 with the other.
Themodificationillustrated in Figure 4:
of the drawing shows a coupling comprising a body portion 20 including a complemental section 21, and constructed from steel plate instead of a casting as in the preferred form. -The body portion 20 is formed to provide lateral flanges 22, one of which is disposed at right angles relatively to the other. i The complemental section 21 is formed with a pair of narrow longitudinal flanges 23, each of which is secured to its respective body portion'flange 22 by means of the rivets 2 The body porttion 20 and its complemental section'21 forma bore 25 having a centrally disposed annular groove 26 preferably pressed outwardly on the periphery of the bore 25. A seat member 27 is mounted in the annular groove 26 and secured therein by the asse'mbly of the section 21 with the body portion 20, as above described.
The seat member 27 is formed to provide an annular seat 28 on the upper face thereof and an annular seat 29 on its lower face. The seats 28 and 29 are provided for the reception of adjacent leg members as de scribed relatively to the preferred form.
The modification shown inFigure 6 pro vides a coupling identical in construction grooves 26.
lit will be noted that the two modifications of the coupling provide structure functioning identically to that disclosed in my preferred form with the exception thit the bores thereof are not ribbed or him chined and in consequence would not pro vice as accurate a union as when using the preferred form of coupling.
