Description
PATENT OFFICE.
PETER KAUIIMAN,IOF HUDSON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,1 39, dated February 3, 1674,' application iiled January 12, 18714.-
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, PETER KAUFMAN, of Hudson, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Chain Elevators for Gorn-Shellers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciication.
My present invention is intended as an iinprovement upon the feeding-elevator for cornshellers for whichLetters Patent No. 141,717 were granted to me August 12, 187 3 5 and the nature of my invention consists in constructing both the wire links and the iiat links of the elevator-chain open, so that the links can be readily separated and put together, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring` to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my invention.
A represents a wire link, and B a dat link, constructed in any of the known and usual ways, except that they are left open-that is, the ends of the wire forming the link A are not welded together. Neither are the ends of the metal forming the llat link B riveted together, as is usual in such cases, and as done :in my patent above referred to.
The advantage of thus leaving the links open is, that the farmer can remove or add a link, or as many as may be needed, at pleasure, without employing a smith for that purpose; and the chain can be put together in that way without the aid of a smith, and is much cheaper than where the links are made connected.
Having thus fully described 'miy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a chain composed of alternate wire links and at links, the construction of said links open, substantially as. and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I havehereunto set my hand this 1st day of December, 1873.
PETER KAUFMAN.
