REEL.
Application file d March 31), 1822. Serial No. 546,116,
T 0 all 1071. 0m it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT P. ANDLAUnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Reel, of which the following is a description, referring to the drawings which accompany this specification.
The invention relates more particularly to a simple and substantial reel especially use ful as a clothes line reel and for similar purposes. And further to an improved axle construction in combination with shaft driving means and allied mechanisms, which is adapted for shipment in a knockdown condition from the factory and for easy assemblage by the customer; said reel being adapted for use by either a right or left handed person when properly assembled for such usage.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the reel in combination with a clothes line supported by posts and ready to receive washings. Fig. 2 is aperspeetive view of the respective elements of the reel before assembly. Fig. 3 represents a cross-sectional view taken through the composite hub member ready to receive the driving shaft. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 10, 10 represent the disc-like side elements of the reel. Two members 11, 11 each having square grooves or channels are placed face to face as shown in Fig. 3 thus providing a square passage 12 in the longitudinal axis of the composite hub member 11. The ends 13 of the hub 11 are preferably reduced in size to provide shoulder elements it which con tact the inner faces of the discs 10, the square ends 13 engaging in square openings through the centers of the discs 10 as will be The foregoing assemblage is preferably fabricated of wood and may be glued or otherwise fastened together.
The driving shaft 16 is a square steel bar bent to form the crank 17 provided with the handle 18. The shaft 16 is perforated at 19 adjacent the crank 17 to receive the pin 20 which serves as a stop element. A ratchet member 21 has a square central hole 22 which is now sleeved upon the shaft 16 to a contact with the pin 20.
The iJ-shaped strap iron member 23 is pro-.
vided with an eye member 24 adapted to engage a hook 25 on a clothes line post 26 as illustrated in Fig. 1; Alatch 27 is pivotally mounted at 28 on'a side arm 29 of the member 23. The arms 29, 30 are provided with holes 31 near their outer ends. The shaft l6is passed through the hole 31on the arm 29 which has been brought into registry with the passage 12 and by pushing the shaft through the passage 12 and the hole 31 on the arm 80, the reel is fully assembled when a second pin 82 is engaged with the hole 33 in the outer end of the shaft 16.
A clothes line at is reeled upon the reel and the reel is preferably kept in the laundry room when not in use. .In use as a. clothes line, the end of the line 34 is se cured to a post 35, and the hook 25- on the post 26 engages the eye member 24cv on the .member 23. The crank 17 and handle 18 are turned. which revolves the shaft 16 in the bearings 31, the square section of the shaft 16 likewise turning the ratchet 21 and axle 11 until the line 34 is drawn taut, the
latch 27 engages the ratchet 21 to maintain v the line in such taut condition.
It is obvious that the ratchet 21 may be sleeved upon the shaft 16 reversed in position so that either right or left handed persons may operate the reel with equal facility. After the clothes are removed from the line, the latch 27 is released, the eye 24 disengaged from the hook 25 and the free end of the line 3 1 is reeled up and the reel returned to the laundry or otherwise dis-- posed of as desired.
While the preferred materials employed in the manufacture of the reel have been designated, I do not so limit my invention in that respect and may employ such other modifications as lie within the scope of the appended claims. Having fully described my invention what I now claim as new and (lesire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A composite hub member for reels including two elements each element having a longitudinally extending square channel like groove, said elements being arranged in face to face contiguous relationship forming a square passage in the longitudinal axis thereof.
2. A composite hub member for reels including two grooved elements in face to face contiguous relationship, a square pas-- sageway in the longitudinal axis thereof, the opposite ends of said composite member being of reduced sectional area for the purposes specified.
3. A reel of the class described including parallel side members in combination with a hub element comprising two grooved members in contiguous face to face relation ship and a square passage through the longitudinal axis of the composite hub element.
4L. A reel of the class described including parallel side members in combination with a hub element comprising two grooved members in contiguous face to face relationship and asquare passage through the longitudinal axis of the composite hub element; and a shaft element engaging the sides of said passage and crank means at one end of said shaft for the purposes disclosed.
5. In a reel of the class described, two parallel side members in combination with a hub element comprising two grooved members in contiguous face to face rela tionship and having a-square passage formed by the said channel elements, a shaft engaging the sides of said passage and carrying a crank at one end thereof, a reversible ratchet member sleevedvon said shaft and a U-shaped member supporting said shaft and having a pivoted latch element in operative relationship to said ratchet member.
6. In a reel of the class described, two parallel side members in combination with a hub element comprising two grooved members in contiguous face to face relationship and having a square passage formed by the said channel elements, a square shaft engaging the sides of said passage and a crank and handle at one end thereof, a reversible ratchet member having a square central hole sleeved upon said shaft, a stop on said shaft; a U-shaped band iron supporting element having bearings at its end portions supporting said shaft, a stop on the end of the shaft beyond the outer bearing, a latch piv-otally mounted on the U-shaped member cooperating with the ratchet member, all for the purposes substantially as specified.
