To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON C. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cairo, in the county of Alexander and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Chokefiom'of which the following is a. specification.
lhis invention relates to choke rods, the primary object of the invention being to provide means for locking the choke rod in its active position to cut ot't, to a degree, the air supply entering the carburetor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means to normally urge the rod to its inactive position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the recise embodiment of the invention herein isclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit oi the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the choke rod which has connection with the usual choke valve that controls the air passing to the carburetor of an engine, not shown.
The rod 5 is donned with circumferentiai grooves t that are disposed in spaced relation with each other, as clearly shown by Figure l of the drawing, the spaces between predetermined grooves varying to insure an accurate adjustment of the choke rod 5, and permit the choke rod to be moved to a position to admit a quantity ofair to the carhuretor adapting carburetor for use in various temperatures, eliminating necessity of adjustment the carburetor tor cold weather.
The iower end of the housing 7 is formed with an inwardly extended flange 8 providng a rest for the washer 9 which cooperates with the washer 10 for supporting the split resilient ring member 11, which is preferabl circular in cross section.
ecured at one end of the housing 7 is a cover plate 125 formed with openings, by means of which the device may be secured to the instrument board of a motor vehicle.
Supported on the rod 5, at a point adjacent to the outer end thereof is a coiled spring 13 which has its lower end contacting with the pin it carried by the rod 5, the op posite end of the coiled spring contacting with the cover plate 12, so that when the rod 5 is pulled through the housing, the spring is placed under tension to urge the choke rod 5 to its normal position, and at the same time retard movement of the rod 5 when the same is being moved to operate the choke rod,
Secured to one end of the rod 5 is a button, indicated at 15, which may be gripped by the operator to move the rod 5 agalnst the tension of the coiled spring to operate the air valve of the carburetor not shown.
Thus it will be seen that if it is desired to secure the rod 5 in a predetermined position, it is only necessary to move the rod against the tension of the coiled spring 13 until the same has assumed its proper position.
The rod 5 is now released, whereupon the ring member-l1 moves into the groove adjacent thereto to lock the rod 5 against move ment. lit is obvious that it it is desired to move the rod 5 to its normal position, a slight pressure on the button 15 wiii expand the ring member 11 and permit the rod 5 to move through the ring member.
