To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that we, HARMON F. DAVEN- PORT and MICHAEL J. VVHELAN, citizens of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State ot Michigan, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cues, of which the following is a specification. i

The object of this invention is to provide a cue butt or an entire cue with a smooth, attractive, durable and sanitary covering which can be easily applied at comparatively low cost.

Further. objects of the invention are to provide a covering for a cue butt or for the entire cue which can be given a high polish or otherwise finished, as desired; which can be washed and cleaned without destroying its surface quality or afecting its composition; which can be made ina variety of forms and shapes without materially varying the cost; and which is substantial and durable and will withstand the rough usage to which cues are often subjected by players.

Cues may be made in a variety of ways .n

but it is common to make them in two arts connected together with a threaded owel 4. Our invention has to do'particularly with the butt and it consists in providing the butt, designated generally 5, with a covering 6 of hard rubber, vulcanized on the wooden core 7. Itvmay be desirable in somel cases to roughen the surface of the core so that the rubber covering may be thoroughly united therewith during the vulcanizing process, but in other cases the surface of the core will beI properly prepared to receive the covering in the ordinary manufacture of the core.

It is apparent that the covering may be applied thickly or thinly, smoothly or with any desired irregularities or ornamentation. It forms a durable and substantial covering whichis not easily broken or scarred and which will withstand the ordinary usage of cues and a great deal of rough usage to which cues are sometimes subjected; in fact, it is our opinion that the surface of this hard rubber covering is more substantial than the surface 4of the usual solid wood cue butt, and that it will scar far less easily. The covering can be .Washed and cleaned and kept in a sanitary condition without injuriously affecting its polish or its composition.

While we regard the invention as particularly useful for covering cue butts, and it is our present intention so to employ it, we recognize that it can be as well applied to the entire cue, if players should so desire; and we reserve the right, therefore, to employ the invention on'the entire cue or on the butt alone within the scope of the fol lowing claims, it being understood that Fig. e
