LOUI S GITTELSOHN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BUTTON.
Application filed .Tune 30, 1919. Serial No. 307,579.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS GrrrELsonN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to pin buttons and has for its principal object the provision of means for preventing theft or displacement of the button from fastened location upon the garment of the wearer.
The invention contemplates the provision of a safety device of new and improved Construction upon buttons of the character mentioned and this without materially increasing the cost of the buttons or render-- ing their use inconvenient.
Another object of the invention is the attainment of this end without having any effect Whatever upon the appearance of the button when in fastened location.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a button embodying my present invention and showing the same positioned on a coat lapel;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation showing the wire pin'in place;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the wire pin; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on the line 1-4: of Fig. 2.
For the purpose of illustrating my in vention I have shown on the drawings a button comprising an outer display shell of celluloid or other usual or-preferred material and adapted to carry any design, insignia or information. In accordance with the usual custom I have provided a wire the body of which lies within the shell and provides a pin leg. The shell consists of a body 11 having an inturned edge 12 providing a concavity therein indicated by reference character 13. A piece of wire is sharpened at an end 14 and extends straight away from said end to provide a leg 15. At the top of this leg the wire is given a curve 16 at right angles to the plane of the shell and as an arcuate body 17 therebeyond lying along the recess 13. This arcuate portion of the wire, however, instead of extending merely part way around Within the recess 13 extends in the present instance clear around to the bend 16 and is there givena similar bend 18 to bring it out from the recess. Beyond the recess a short end is provided and this end is pointed to enter the garment and prevent its easy dislodgment. The point extends in a general direction away from the direction of the pin leg and may be a mere burr disposed from the plane of the button and of course may extend in any desired direction to accomplish the results. It may be otherwise'located, [it being desirablaihowever, that it be close to the pin leg in order to increase its opposition to the withdrawing movement and prevent turning the button out of fixed location. It preferably, however, is located at the top and not to extend appreciably above the shell, this last in order that it may not scratch the fingers of the person positioning it.
However, it will be noted in any event that the point is placed away from the outside of the shell by an amount at least of the portion 12 of the shell behind the recess 13. I
It is thought that the invention and many 2 of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificingall of its material advan tages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof. 2
I claim:
1. A button comprising an arcuate display shell and a holding wire disposed within and substantially around said shell, the ends of said wire protruding from said shell at proximate points and one of said ends extending in one direction to form a relatively long sharpened leg and the other being, turned to opposite direction and terminating close to the peripheral edge of the shell and sharpened to form a safety prong or burr for insertion into the garment of the wearer to prevent dislodgment of the button.
2. A button comprising an arcuate display shell and a holding wire disposed within and substantially around said shell, the
ends of said Wire protruding from said edge of the display shell and outside the shell at proximate points and one of said vertical plane thereof for insertion into the ends extending in one direction to form a garment of the wearer to prevent dislodg- 10 relatively long sharpened leg and the other nient 01 the button, said leg and said prong being turned to opposite direction and being adjacent and vertically aligned with sharpened to form asafety prong or burr their points extending oppositely.
that terminates just beneath the peripheral LOUIS GITTELSOHN.
