To all to 7mm it may camera 7 Be it known that I, dairies W, Grim-Fur, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Refractometers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to re'fractometers or eye testing devices and has for an object the provision of a device by means of which a single line of type or indicia may be singly and selectively exposed in a clear and distinct manner. a
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above ciaracter which may be operated from a. remote point, by means of a single operating cord which is arranged to perform a number of separate functions, thus simplifying the operation of the device. a
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction,
lustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a casing which is shown as of rectangular shape and includes a front wall 11 and a rear removable wall 12, the latter being preferably provided with marginal flanges 13 for engagement within the casing so as to provide a neat and compact appearance.

while the flange 17 which surrounds the lower opening extends both within and with out the casing. I v
Extending transversely through the easing is a rod or bolt 19 which forms a shaft for a pair of rotatably mounted disks, to be later described in detail. In addition, this shaft vprovides means for removahly holding the rear wall 12 of the casing in position. Mounted upon the shaft 19 is a disk 20, preferably formed of glass, the said disk having its rear face covered with a suitable translucent material 21, being provided with a hub 22. The disk is provided upon its oppositeface with letters or suitable indicia which is adapted to be brought. within either of the sight openings and for this purpose there is provided an operating arm 23 which ismounted for pivotal movement upon the shaft 19. A sleeve or bushing 24; is preferably interposed between the opening provided in the arm 23 and the shaft 19 and is of a length to extend through an opening provided in the rear wall 12 of the casing. Carriedby the arm 23 isa p ivotally mounted dog 2% which isarranged to engage notches 25 disposed transversely around the hub 22 so that when thearmis moved upward the dog will engage one of these notches to retate the disk 20. The arm is normally held in lowered position by a spring 26, which has one end securedto the arm and its opposite end securedto an arm 27, which is pivotally mounted as shown at 28 within the casing. The upper end-of this arm 27 carries a brake shoe 29 which engages the periphery of the hub 22 so that the disk 20 will be held stationary until movement is imparted thereto through the operation of the arm 23., In order to operate this arm, the dog 24: has attached to one end a cord or cable 30 which passes through an opening provided in the top of the casing 1.0 and may extend to any convenient point. Also mounted upon theshaft 19 is a second disk 31, which is provided with openings 32 and 88. These openings are adapted to be brought into register with the openings 14 and 15 respectively provided in the front of the casing 10 and when so positioned will expose certain of the indicia upon the disk 20 to view. lin addition, the disk 31 is provided with spaced openings 3% which are covered by atranslucent covering of differentgcolors and are so arranged Within the disk 3111s to be exposed tl'irough the sight opening 15. i
In order to rotate the disk 31 it is provided upon its'rear time with spaced'teeth 35 which are adapted to be engaged by a spring dog 36 mounted upon the outer end of the arm 23, so that in addition to opcrating the disk 20, operation of the arm will rotate the disk 31. The disk may be rotated independently of'the disk 31 by limiting the pivotal movement of the arm 34, as the dog 24 is located between thejdog adapted to be engaged by a spring dog 39 which is pivotally mounted within the casing 10. The casing" is further provided with a stop 10 whichlimitsthe downward movementofthe arm 23 and also acts" as a guide for the disk 20.
1 Carried by the removable wall 12bit the casing 10 are brackets 41', which carry light sockets 42, the latter being adapted to contain incandescent lamps to supply proper illumination at the rear of the disks, the said lamps being located adjacent the openings 14: and 15. A conductor 43 extends from the lamp sockets to the'out side'of the casing for connection with'a suitable source oi current. The disks 20 and 31 are preferably separated by a small disk 44, suitable washers being interposed between the disks.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction andthe right is here in reserved to make such changes as properly an within the scope of the a'ppended claims.
