Be it known that l, SAMUEL SCHRANIZ, a

- citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, .State of Missouri, "have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which thefollowing is a speclfication. I Y a My invention relates to clasps'and more particularly to improved-clasps for spectacle cases.

An important object of my inventlon is to provide an improved clasp for spectacle cases which will be so constructed and so disposed on thespectacle case as to be highly effective to retain the case in the desired position and at the same time will not present a projection likely to cause annoyance or discomfort to the user.

Other objects and advantages reside in'the certain novel features of thecombination, construction and arrangement of parts and will become apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part ofthis specification and inwhich Figure 1 shows the device in use,

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the conventional spectacle case provided as usual with a curved top or cover B. This cover is usually so formed as topr'esent an elevated or crown portion at the center of the case from which crown portion, the

cover gradually slopes to each end of the case. For this reason, the ordinary spectacle' case presents its greatest thickness at the center and a thickness gradually decreasing toward each end thereof.

My improved clasp is arrangedlon the cover side of the spectacle case and consists of'a base portion 5 secured to the cover near one end thereof by means of suitable fasteners such as rivets 6. Integral with the base is an outwardly bowed spring portion 7 whichis extended to form a clasping portion 8 which normally bears against the apex of the crown of the cover due to the action of the spring portion 7. The clasping portion 8 has its extremity flared upwardly as at 8 to facilitate the engagement of the clasp with the supporting material. The amount of this flare is very slight, as shown in the drawing. I

An important feature of my invention resides in the factothat the clasp presents no projection likely to 'occasion annoyance or discomfort to the user. This is especially true when the clasp is utilized to retain the spectacle case in the inside pocket of the garment, as in this instance the clasp is ad- .jacent the body of the wearer and if any projections are presented they occasion much discomfort and annoyance. It is to be noted that the base portion and the outwardly curved spring portion which are usually the source of most discomfort, are both arranged at points of lesser thickness on the spectacle case so that the farthest projecting point of the outwardly curved portion will either lie approximately in or within a plane tangent with the apex of the crown and parallel with the base .of said case and that this will also be true of the clasping portion except for the thickness of the metal constituting the clasp, which is immaterial, being of flattened and light metallic construction. In a word, the clasp structure being arranged on a part of the spectacle case of lesser thickness, presents no projection, approximately, beyond the greater thickness of the spectacle case at the crown portion thereof.

I claim consisting of a spectacle case having a curved cover provided with a crown portion at the center gradually sloping toward each end and a clasp for said spectacle case having a clasping portion adapted to bear against the crown of the cover of the case, a base portion secured to the cover of the case, and an intermediate outwardly bowed spring portion integral with said base portion and with said clasping portion, said spring portion and said base portion being arranged to lie within the plane tangent to the apex of-the crown of said cover and parallel to the base of said case, all as and for the purposes set forth. 1
