COLLAISIBLE CANE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed March 8, 1919. Serial No. 281,451.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK KUTWIoz, a citizen of the Republic of Poland, residing at Regina, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Canes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to canes and similar walking sticks, and an object of the present invention is to provide a cane of this character which can be easily and readily folded in a compact package, whereby when the same is not in use it may be placed within a small package or the pocket of the user. A further object of the present in vention is to provide a folding cane consisting of a plurality of folding parts, which when in an open position will establish a single rigid section so that it may be used as a walking stick.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efiiciency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cane embodied in the present invention when in open or extended position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cane when in folded position. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section of one of the connecting hinges of the sections; and, Fig. 4 is a detail section taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
' but have a tapered they are'in open or extended position. The
opposite ends of each section are square so that they may rest one upon the other and form a close connection. countersunk within the ends of each section are hinges and the hinges indicated by the numeral 2 are arranged at one side of the cane when in extended position, whereas the hinges 3 are arranged at one side of the sections or at right angles to the hinges 2. Extending from the medial portion of one side of each section is a blade 4 and these blades 4 are adapted to rest within the slots 5 formed within the opposite end of the adjacent sections. One edge of each of these blades is cut away as at 6 so that they will enter the slots 5 freely. Countersunk within one face of each section is a groove '7 and each groove is arranged in the face of each section opposite to that to which the hinge is connected, and slidably mounted within this groove is a locking member comprising a sliding blade 8. One end of this blade 8 is adapted to rest within the alining groove 9 formed within the adjacent section. The top section may be provided with a suitable knob or handle 10 of any desired or wellknown configuration, whereas the outer end of the lower section is provided with a protecting nipple 11. The blades 4 may be secured and retained within the section by means of the rivets or pins 12. By so hingedly connecting the sections together they may be folded in the position as shown in Fig. 2, thereby taking up a comparatively small amount of space and permitting same to be folded in a small package.
When it is desired to open the cane so as to present it in its extended position as shown in Fig. 1, the sections may be swung upon their hinged connections and the blades 4: will enter the grooves 5, thereby forming substantially a single rigid stick, and to prevent the sections from swinging upon their hinged connections the locking blades 8 may be moved along so as to be seated within the recesses 9, whereby the sections will be held in an extended position to provide a sin le stick suitable for use when walking. hen it is desired the user able locking members may be used for look- .ing the sections in open position.
may release the locking members by sliding the blades 8 back Within the recesses 7 and folding the sections upon one another, whereby they Will be folded in a compact package, so that the cane will take up a comparatively small amount of space When not in use.
Whereas I have illustrated in the drawings a sliding blade 8 as a locking member it is of course to be understood that any suit- Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cane of the character described, comprising a plurality of sections, hinges conaseaeee necting said sections together, the said hinges being so arranged that the adjacent sections may be folded one upon the other, a blade extending from one end of each section, the opposite end of each section having recesses therein for receiving said blades, registering grooves formed in the ends of each section, and locking members slidably mounted in one of said grooves and engaging in the opposing section groove for look- .ing said sections in open position.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand Feb. 24th, 1919.
, FRANK KUTWICZ.
