Description
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
attorney THOMAS J'. vSLOWZEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
nnconnrcrlnnnnnh Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar.30 1920.
Application filed May 21, 1919. Serial No. 298,649.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. SLOWEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Mar land, have invented a new and useful ecord-Gleaner, of
Y which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for phonographs whereby the records'can be cleaned as they' rotate with the support ing table of the machine, it being poss ble to .use the cleaner either during the playing of the record or independently thereof, as
" shown.
preferred.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which receives its power from the rotating table and isadjustable to tables of different sizes and to'machines of various makes. Another object is to provide a device of this type which is' cheap to manufacture,- can be applied easily, and can be left on the machine at all times, if so desired, without mar-ring the appearance of the machine.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details. ofconstruction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes maybe made in the construction .and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantagesof the invention as set forth in the appended claims. v
In the accompanying drawings he preferred form of the invention as been In said drawings- Figure 1 isa side elevation of the device, the adjacent parts of the phonograph being shown by broken lines.
'Fig. 2 is a section on line II- II, Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a split sleeve having a clamping screw whereby the sleeve can be tightened on the upstanding-sound tube A of a phonograplnthe said bolt be'ingindicated at 2. The sleeve 1 has a bearing outstanding therefrom, as at 3and is also provided with a finger 4.. A U-shaped member or yoke 5 has onearm thereof insertible downwardly into the bearing 3 and adapted to rotate therein. A collar. 6 is adjustably mounted on said arm Of the yoke and is held in place by a set screw 7 This collar bears downwardly upon the bearing 3 and limits the downward movement of the member 5. The other arm of the member or yoke 5 has a supporting strip 8 extending from the lower end thereof toward the rotary table B of the phonograph, and the lower end of a bearing pin 9 engages this strip and is engaged by a friction disk 10. A gear 11-is located on the disk and engages another gear 12 secured to a shaft 13. One
' end of this shaft is journaled in the free k arm of the yoke 5 and at an intermediate point the shaft is journaled in the pin 9. The free end of the shaft 13 is provided with a cleaner or bufi'er 14 which can be in the form of a cylindrical brush, roll or the like. A spring 14 is fastened at one end to the finger 4 and at its other end to the strip 8 and this spring operates to pull the friction disk 10 against the periphery of the table B so that, when the table is rotated, motion-will be transmitted to the shaft 13' and cleaner 14. This cleaner will be rotated so as to brush oppositely to the direction of rotation of the record disk C. When the device is not in use it can be unfastened from-the finger 4, lifted out of the bearing 3; and removed from the machine. If desired, however, it can be left onthe machine 7 to clean each record as it is being played. What is claimed is 4 1 ,1. A cleaning attachment for phonographs, including 'a swinging structure, a
'revoluble member carried thereby for engagement with and actuation by the rotary"; table of a phonograph, a revoluble cleaning element driven by said member for engagement with the surfaceof a record on the table, and means for attaching the swinging structure to a phonograph.
2. An attachment for phonographs, including a swinging structure, a revoluble member carried. thereby for engagement with the periphery of the revoluble table of a phonograph, a revoluble cleaning elementv movable with said structure and adapted to engage the surface of a record on the table, and yielding means for holding the revoluble member in engagement with the peripheryof the table.
3. An attachment for phonographs includin an attachin member, a yoke detachab yand pivotal y connected thereto, a friction wheel carried by the yoke, yielding means for holdingsaid Wheel incontact with the periphery of the rotary table'of a as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signaphonograph, a cleaning element adapted to hire 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
engage the surface of a record on said table THOMAS J SLOWEY and movable with the yoke, and means for 5 transmitting motion to said element from Witnesses:
the wheel. 7 IVY E. SIMPSON,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing PHIDOMENA A. RooHELL.
