FLASH-LIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Application filed May 12, 1919. Serial No. 296,300.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE FRANKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 666 lVest 162d street, New York city, in the county of NewYork and State of New York, have'invented certain new and useful 11nprovements in Flash-Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a flashlight construction.
Portable electric lamps, which derive their supply of current from one or more batteries are very well known. They usually embody a small electric bulb, means for connecting it to the batteries including a switch, and a small lens which projects the light in the desired manner.
One of the objects of my new and improved construction is to assemble the flashlight battery together with the lens and electric globe so as to provide a simple and eiicient switch for providing a continuous or an intermittent light.
Other objects of my invention will be described in the following specification and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.
f Figure 1 is a vertical section partially in elevation. l j j y Fig. 2 is a vertical elevation partially in section and showing a different embodiment, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
The lens 1 is suitably connected to a metal casing 2. The bulb, which is not shown in the drawings because it is in itself an old and well known part, and as such forms no part of my invention, is held in the head 3 of the casing 2, so that its light is properly refracted by the lens 1. The head 3 is connected to the casing 2 by any suitable means and it may be detachable, for affording access to thelens and to the globe.
The current is supplied from a battery 1, which has an envelop separated from the casing 2, so that it may be taken out and replaced by a new battery.
One terminal of the electric bulb is connected to the metal casing 2, so as to be in circuit therewith, and the other terminal is connected to an insulated binding post located at the rear end of the head 3. This insulated binding post or terminal is adapted to contact with a-binding post or pole located at the adjacent end of the battery 4, when the battery 4 is inserted into the proper position, which is shown in the drawings.
The other pole or terminal of the battery 4, is located at the opposite end of the battery 4r and is adapted to contact with the coil spring 57 which also firmly maintains the battery 4t in proper position so as to provide contact between the said insulated terminal of the lamp and the adjacent pole of the battery.
The rear end of the casing 2 is closed by a cap 6,'which is suitably threaded as shown so as to be detachably secured to the casing 2. This cap 6 has a base 7, made of some insulating composition, in which a metal member 8 is embedded so as to be irmly secured thereto, and also support the spring 5 which may be detachable therefrom or which may be secured thereto.
The metal casing 2 has a sheath 9 of insulating composition secured thereto, and a metal member 10, which is located in this sheath, and insulated thereby from the casing 2, is adapted to have its lower end contact with the base member S, when the base 6 is secured in proper position.
The casing 2 has a metal extension 11 secured thereto by rivets or any other suitable means, and ,this has a seat 12 made of suitable insulating material secured thereto, and also if desired to the casing 2. A binding post or terminal 14. which is secured and therefore connected to the circuit member 10, projects beyond the seat 12.
The extension 11 has a sliding button 15 slidably secured thereto. This button 15 carries a switch arm 16 which is curved so that it is adapted to Contact with the curved terminal 14.
The seat 11 is also provided with a metal arm 18, which is provided with a head 19 that projects through the seat 11.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows By simply putting the battery et into place, and screwing on the cap 6, one pole of the battery is put into contact with the insulated terminal of the bulb or globe, and the other pole is put into contact with the metal base member 8. Since the metal button 15 is in contact with the metal extension 11 of the casing 2, by suitably sliding the button 15 toward the lens, until the switch arm 16 is in contact with the terminal 14:, the circuit is completed and a continuous light is secured.
The preferred method of making and assembling the structure shown in the drawings is as follows z- 2 i 1,332,8es
ceivers of telephones and for similar pur-v poses. Such a composition can be molded under great pressure, such as can be supplied by means of a hydraulic press, andv the cap 6, its base 7, and its base member 8, are all assembled by molding under pressure, so that insulating base 7 firmly holds both the cap 6 and the lbase member 8. This construction obviates the need of all rivets or similar parts and hence is more economical and etlicient.
As shown in the drawings, the base member S has inturned portions, or langes which are irmly embedded in the moldable insulating composition.
The insulating base or seat 12 of the eX- tension 11 is made oi' a similar composition and isy secured inplace by the terminal 14a which is connected to the stationary circuit member 10 and also by the resilient arm 18 which is united therewith by molding under suiiicient pressure, and which has the same contour as the extension 11 as shown in Fig. 1. t
If desired the case 2 of the iiashlight could be made of some insulating material, and one terminal of the lamp could then be connected to the post 14 by some suitable conductor.
I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerousfchanges could be made in detail without departing from its spirit.
I claim 1; In a flashlight, the combination of a metal case having one of its ends open, an electric lamp carried thereby and having one of its terminals in circuit with said metal case and the other terminal insulated therefrom, a battery having terminals at f other terminal against that terminal of the lamp which is insulated from the casing, a
stationary circuit member insulated from the said casing, and separate from and adapted to contact with the said base member when the said cap is placed in its proper position, and switch means adapted to place said stationary circuit member into and out of circuit with the casing.
2. In aV flashlight,a metal case carrying .Y an electric lamp, one of the terminals of the said lam-p beingzconnected to the said case and the other terminal being insulated therefrom, a battery having terminals at its ends, one of the ends of the said casing being open and having a cap provided with an insulated base for closing the said open end, a conducting base member connected to the said insulated base and carrying a spring, said spring being adapted to contact with one of the terminals of the said battery and force the other terminal against that terminal of the lamp which is insulated from the said case, a stationary circuit member secured to and insulated frolnthe said casing and adapted to contact with the said conducting base member when the said cap is in proper position, the said casing having a metal extension secured to the said case and provided with a seat made of moldable insulating composition, a terminal passing through the said seat and connected to the said circuit member, and adapted to retain the said seat in its place, and switch means located in the said extension and adapted to place the said last mentioned terminal into and out of contact with the said eXtension and the said casing.
3. In a flashlight, a metal case carrying an electric lamp, one of the terminals of the said lamp being connected to the said case and the other terminal being insulated therefrom, a battery having terminals at its ends, one of the ends of the said casing being open and having a cap provided with an insulated base for closing the saidopen end,
a conducting base member connected to the said insulated base and carrying a spring, said spring being adapted to contact with one of the terminals ofthe said battery and force the other terminal against that terminal of the lamp which is insulated from the said case, a stationary circuit member secured to and insulated from the said casing and adapted to contactwith the vsaid conducting base member when the said cap is in proper position, the said casing having a metal extension secured to the said case and provided with aseat made of moldable insulating composition, a terminal passing through the said seat and connected to the said circuit member, and ladapted to retain the said seat in its place, a button located in the said extension opposite the said terminal passing through the seat, the said button being mounted at the end of a resilient` arm whichfhas the same contour as the said eXtension and has its end embedded in the said seat, the aid button being" adapted to contact with the said terminal 'when it is pushed in so as to complete the circuit, the said extension also carrying a slide button hav ing its switch arm located in the said eX- tension and adapted to contact with Y- the said terminal in the extension.
In testimony whereof I' hereunto .aiix my signature.'
