Speeincation of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
.application led August 9, 1919. Serial No. 316,343. i
ToaZl whom z't may oo ncem.'
Be it known thatI, BERTHOM R. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheridan, in the county of Douglas and 'State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved match safe to be embedded in and carried by the wall, whereby the matches contained therein may be handled for use.
One of the objects of the invention is to' provide a very simple, eiiicient and practical device of this kind, which may be manufactured for a'rel'atively low cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
A further object of the invention is to provide a match safe, comprising a receptacle receiving section to be embedded in and carried by the wall, and provided with a marginal flange counter sunk in the wall, so as to be flush therewith, and a match receiving section or drawer adapted to enter the receptacle .receiving section, the outer end wall of said match receivng section overlying the marginal flange-end of the receptacle receiving section, whereby the drawer or match receiving section may be readily moved outwardly and inwardly to permit access to the matches.
A further object of the invention is to provide a match safe, which will not project outwardly from the surface 'of the wall in such a manner that it can be accidentally struck, which would cause the spilling of the matches, or cause the detachment of the safe. x
The invention further aims to provide a match safe of this kind including means to prevent the match receiving receptacle or drawer from being entirely removed from thereceptacle receiving section which is embedded in the wall, said means comprising a pair of arms mounted on the upper wall of the receptacle receiving section and p rovided with right angle extending ends to penetrate the wall of the receptacle recelvm section, in the path of the inner end wall o the match receiving receptacle, to prevent the latter receptacle from being entirely removed, section.
A further object of the invention is to provide integrally removable arms carried by the top wall of the receptacle receiving when withdrawn from its receiving section, and adapted to be lifted, to permit the match receiving receptacle to be entirely removed, 1f desired, there being retaining means to hold the right angle extended portions of the arms in positions penetrating the top of the receptacle receiving section.
While the design and construction at present set forth and illustrated are deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result 'of a reduction of the invention to a more practical. form for .commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. i
In the drawings:
. Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the improved match safe as applied to a wall, and embedded therein, saidsafe having a match receiving receptacle or" drawer slidably mountedin the receptacle receiving section, and having its outer end wall ilat against the wall of -the room, the wall of the room bein broken away to show the receptacle receiving section..
Fig. 2 is -a vertical sectional view through the match safe online 2f-2 of Fig. l, showing the drawer pulled outwardly its full ylength in dotted lines, whereby access may be section.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the receptacle` receiving section.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the drawer.
Referring more especially to the drawings, l designates the wall of a portion of a room and 2 denotes a cavity formed therecomprises'the side. bottom, inner end and ad to the matches in the match receiving.
top wall 4, 5, 6 and 7. The outer end of the' sarily, pass through the marginal flange of the section or receptacle 3, so as tosecure the same in place.
A transverse rod 10 is mounted in hearings 11 of the top wall 7 of the receptacle or section 3. rfhis rod 10 has a right angle extending arm 11, the extremity of which terminates in an extension 12, which enters an opening or aperture 1 3. A coil spring is mounted upon the rod, and one of its end portions, which constitutes an arm 15, engages the upper. surface of the wall of the section or receptacle 3. The other end portion of the coil spring is formed into an extension spring arm 17, having a curved portion 18. Pivoted on the transverse rodis the eye 19 of a retaining element 20, which has a right angle extension 21, passing through an opening or aperture 22 in the top wall of the receptacle receiving section. The curved extension of the spring arm of the coil spring overlies and engages the element or member 20, thereby applying pressure thereon andl holdingits extension penetrating throughy the aperture or opening.
The other end of the coil spring bears upon the upper or top wall of the receptacle receiving section, thereby tensioning the spring, so that its spring arm will retain the element or member with its extension through the opening or aperture.
The match receiving receptacle of. the
match safe is preferably rectangular in` shape, and is adapted to slidably engage the receptacle receiving section. This match receiving receptacle comprises side, bottom and end. walls 23, 211, 25 and 26. The end wall 25 of the match receiving receptacle is preferably rectangular in shape, and is larger than the receptacle receiving section, so as to overlie the marginal flange of the receptacle receiving section, thereby not only bscuring the Vfastening screws of the receptacle receiving section, but also assuming a closed position relative to the wall of the room, thereby affording a neat appearance,
and also preventing the match receiving receptacle from acting as an obstruction. This end wall 25 may be easily grasped on its opposite edges, so that the match receiving receptacle may be withdrawn from the receptacle receiving section. The extension 12 of the right angle extending arm of the rod and the extensions 21 assume positions in the path of the end wall 26 of the match receiving receptacle, thereby preventing the match receiving receptacle from being withdrawn entirely from the receptacle receiving section, that is accidentally. The limiting extensions at their Alower end have lateral lugs or hooks 27 to enter the openings 28 of the end wall 26, to prevent the match receiv-` ing receptacle from being first tilted upwardly at its outer end so as to permit the end wall 26 to'be disengaged frombehind said extensions, to insure prevention of removing the match receiving receptacle.
,Howeven if desired, the match receiving rod, thereby holding the arm 'of the rod in its proper position with its extension penetrating through the receptacle receiving section. lt is obvious, however, -that upward pressure upon the extension of the Iarm of the rod, will cause the wide ends of the rod to overcome its contact with the part 30 of the bearing, thereby permitting the match receiving receptacle to 'be entirely removed,
since the hook of the extension will be allowed to pass the upper edge of the inner wall of the match receiving receptacle. The element or member may be likewise manipulated, to insure the removal of the match receiving receptacle.
rlhe retaining means which comprises the extensions 12 and 21, and also the parts 11a and 20, for preventing the safe. or 'drawer from being removed entirely from the receptacle receiving section may be constructed in any other suitable manner, or other retaining means provided such as will all within the scope ofwhat is claimed. Furthermore, the upper and lower edges of the outer wall of the match safe or drawer is providedwith finger engaging members 25 to be grasped, so that the safeor drawer may be pulled from the receptacle receiving section. Other means for this purpose, formed within the scope of what is claimed may be employed, if desired.
' The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
In a match safe, the combination with a receptacle receiving section, of a match receiving receptacle slidably litting l the receptacle receiving section and provided with an enlarged outer end wall overlying the open end of the receptacle receiving section, the inner end wall of the match receiving receptacle having openings, spring tensioned members mounted upon the exterior of the the match reeeiving receptacle to limit the upper Wall of the receptacle receiving secreceptacle in an extended position and pre- 10 tion and having right angle extending parts venting the receptacle from being entirely penetrating through the upper Wall of the Withdrawn.
receptacle receiving section, said right angle In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my extending parts of the members having signature.
laterally extending projections adapted to enter the openings of the inner end Wall of l BERTROM R. RUSSELL.
