Description

UNITED STA ES PA-TENT oFFIo-n.
DONALD C. OVERB AGH, OF CHICAGO, ILLI NOIS.
mammal-m ARMoREn EoNnUoToits;
. X Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 20, 1920;
Application tiled October 31, 1918. SerilNo. 260,422.
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD C. OvEnnAGH, a citizen of the United States, resid ng at- 3617 Pine Grove avenuefChicago, 1n the 5 county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Connectors for Armored Conductors, of which the following 1s a speclficatlon.
My invention relates particularly to coni nectors for application to outlet-boxes used in electrical. installations, for firmly secur.-'
desirable, as it often does, to provide a plurality of pairs of conductors extending into an outlet-box, as for example where it is desirable to provide for the passage of the current througha plurality of boxes in series and tap the conductors therein for the fix- 3 Euros adjacent the boxes, to provide two of the connectors secured'to such box atodifferent points, each -for two} wires. This requirement is not only objectionable on account of expenseof equipment, but it is often times very inconvenient, if not impracticable, to secure two of the connectors to a single outlet-box, particularly when the second connector is to be attached to the box after the latter has been installed,- and 40 especially in the case of re-wiring a building, for example, as oftentimes the portion of'the'box to whi'chthe secondconne'ctor is to be attached, is covered; by a part of the 4 building construction, as for example a'joist',
5 or the like. I i A i v One of ny. objects is to overcometheobjections abovepointed out and to "provide a connector whichshall have asi'n'glepoint of connectionwith the outlet-box andserveas the securingmeans for. aiplurality of armor .portions of conductors, wher'eby a-plurality of sets of current-conducting wires may be let into a box by the employment of a single connector only and-another object is'to'provide improved means for'connecting'the armor orarmors to the body of the connector,
whether adapted for receiving two armors or one only, Wl'llCh shall be simple and inexpensive of construction, readily adjusted to clamping position and stable.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: .Figure 1 is a sectional view taken at the line 1-1 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrows of an outlet-box equipped with a connector constructed in accordance with my invention and shown in connection with a the annored-portions of current-conductors secured thereto, the conductors being represented as extending into the outlet-box.
Fig. 2 is a section taken at the line 22 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the .direction of the arrows; and Fig. 3, an end view of the connector with the conductors removed, this view being taken from the left-hand side of Fig, 1, and the conductors shown by dotted 1ne According to the preferred embodiment of my invention, my improved connector, which is preferablyma'de of malleable iron, though it may be made of any'other suitable material, is formed ofthe hollow crosswiseelongated portion 3 of'a length-somewhat greater than double the diameter of the armor surroundingthe conductors to be secured by the connector, and the restricted hollow portion 4 with the shoulder-portion 5 interposed between the portions 3 and 4. The portion at is of an external diameter adapting it to beinserted'through the opening usually provided in outletsboxes for conmotors for conductors, and is externally screw-threaded as represented at 6 for'en gagem'ent with a nut 7; and the portions,
for receivingthe ends of the armors, refer-"- ably contains .a partly mutilated ri shown: dividing the space-therein intotwo armor-receiving sockets 9.
The portion='3 of the device isprovided with means for securing thereinthe ends-"of the armors of conductors to attached 3 to the connector, thesemeans,lacoordingitothe illustrated embodiment -'of any. invention,
comprising machine-screws "10 screwing in openings in a wall l 2f 'o'f the pm 3 "which is preferably-thickened' as indicated, these screws beingso locatedthat their'innerendswill extend into intersecting tangential ;po-'
sitio'nf relative to the inner sides of {the arifinorswh'en positioned therein, as shown in 'In'the use of the connector .for connecting thereto a pair of armor portion's; of con- S asductors,
thereof extend into the socketsoftheportion 3 of the connector and .by rotating the screws into engagement at their inner ends with the armors 13 the latter are firmly clamped in position on the connector, the unarmored-portlons ofthe conductors 14:
B duced, end- portion 40f t 10 and 15 extending through the opposite, re-
e connector, which -'s secured to the outlet-box, as for example that illustrated at 16, by' inserting its reduced-portion 4 intoihe connector-opening of the box and thereupon applying the nut 7 to the-inner end of the portion 4 as shown It W111 be understood that if desired, the
connector illustrated may be used for connecting with an outlet-box a single armorsection, as where the current is not to be carried to another outlet-box, and thus the connector may be used as a connector for one or a plurality of armor-sections and conductors as desired, also, if desired, the'connector may be constructed for receiving one armor-section only. I I
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction in which my invention is embodied, I do not wish to be understood as intending-to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
the" ends of the armor-portions .I 0 What I claim as new and deslre'to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. connector. for armored conductors forming afitting and formed with a hollow portion at which the connector is'ada ted to connect with the opening of an out et-box,
and a hollow, portion opening into said first v referred-to hollow portion, for receiving the ends of .a plurality of armor-portions of conductors, and means, for securing said armor portions m place to permit the ends of the conductors to extend into said. fiI'St-' referred to hollow portion, extending into a" position between said armor portions and Y clamping them to the wall of said secondreferred to hollow portion.
2.. A connector for armored conductors forming a fitting and formed of a hollow member-having a portion at which the connector is adapted to connect with the opening of an outlet-box and a portion for recerving the ends of a plurality of armorportions of conductors, opening intosaid first-named portion, and means for securing said armor portions in place.
3. A connector for armored conductors forming afitting and formed of a hollow member adapted to connect with the opening of an outlet-box and adapted to receive the ends of aplurality of armor-portions of connectors, with a partition arranged to ex-.
tend between the said armor portions, and screw devices screwing in the wall of said hollow member and adapted to engage at their free inner ends the armor-portions of the conductors tangentially of the latter for clamping the conductors in place against the wall of said hollow member.
