WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919..
Application filed September 6, 1919. Serial No. 322,111.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUPERT N. OYSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wrenches, and has for its object to provide a device of this character, the handle of which revolves and includes at its ends a plurality of nut engaging sockets of various sizes which may be instantly adjusted.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel mechanism. for locking the sockets firmly in position when in use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character having pivoted to its end a terret including a plurality of sockets which may be instantly rotated to bring the desired socket into position and then firmly lock it to the rotating handle.
These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawno in which:
T igure 1 is a perspective view of the complete wrench.
Fig. 2 is an end View of the terret.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates the shank of a handle, having its end portion 6 bent outwardly and upwardly and provided at its end with a knob 7 which is pivoted thereto. A hand grip 8 iscarried by the shank 5 of the handle. The remaining end 9 of the handle is bent at right angles to the shank 5 and is provided with a groove or he way 10. A terret l]. is provided and includes a plurality of radiating nut engaging sockets 12. These sockets are of various sizes. The central portionot the terret 11 has a central bore 13, through which the end 9 or the handle extends. It washer id is disposed on the end of the handle, and retained by means of a screw to prevent disengagement of the terret from the handle. Communicating with the bore 13 IS a plurality of keyways 15. Slidably mounted in the keyway 10 is a key 16 provided with an operating finger piece 17 adapted to withdraw the key 16 from the keyways 1n the terret' 11 when it is desired to adjust the terret.
Encircling the key way and end 9 of the handle 1s an expansion spring 18 secured at .one end to the handle and at its other end to the key 16 with the finger piece 17 and is intended to urge the key outwardly from the end of the handle into the registering keyways l5 oithe'terret and to prevent disengagement of the'key 16 from the keyway 10. i
In operation, to bring the desired wrench engaging socket into osition, the finger piece 17 is grasped by e operator so as to withdraw the key 16 from the keyway of the terret. The terret is then rotated to bring the desired socket in position, whereupon the finger piece is released and the key, throu h the action of the spring, is forced into t e registering keywav in the terret. Dur' the operation oithe wrench, the knob 'l is held stationary while the handle 8 is grasped to revolve the handle and terret.
From the foregoing description, it will readily be seen that this wrench can be instantly adjusted to accommodate various sizes of nuts, and in view of its novel form,
of handle permits greater force to be applied to the nut in the tightenin or loosening operation. It is particular y ada ted for use on demountable automobile w eel rims, and will also be found especially useful for the various parts of the engine. The various sizes of sockets, however, permit its unlimited utility wherever a wrench is desired.
at is claimed is 1. In a wrench, a rotatable handle havin a groove extending through one end thereo a nut engaging member having a central bore, and a plurality of recesses communicating with the bore, said member being rotatable on the handle over a. portion of the groove, and a key slidabie in the groove and projecting above the surface of the han dle, one end of the projecting portion engaging a registering recess 0 the bore to key said member to the handle.
2. In a wrench, a rotatable handle havin a groove extending through one end thereo a nut engaging member having a central bore, and a plurality of recesses communicating with the bore, said member bein ro tata'ble on the handle over a portion 0? the groove, and a key slidable in the groove and projecting above the surface of the handle, one end of the projecting portion engaging a registering recess of the here to key said neeeeee member at its pivotai connection to the registering recess of the bore, the opposite handle. surface of the end portion engaging the 3. In a Wrench a rotatable handle homing groove within the bore and a spring secured a groove extending through one end thereof, at one end to the handle and surrounding a nut engaging member having a central the grooved portion thereof and the key for I bore and a plurality of recesses eonnnunicetoperating and preventing disengaging of the ing with the bore, said member being" roket from the handle.
