Be it known that I, ADOLPI-I G. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shades or Beflectors for Incandescent Electric Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in shades or reflectors for incandescent electric lamps, the object being to provide for positioning the lamp bulb more centrally within the reflector or shade and also to secure economy of space, reduction in size and cost, and a better and more workmanlike appearance.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shade or reflector characterized by its provision with an assembling-sleeve fastened in place between its ends so that its threaded inner end extends into the shade or reflector and its shouldered outer end projects therefrom.
For the illustration of my invention I have herein shown a parabolic reflector or shade 3 of standard shape and formed near its edge with an opening 4 into which I insert and fasten by solder or otherwise at a point between its ends, an assembling-sleeve 5 having its inner end formed with threads, and its outer end formed with a shoulder 7, the threaded end of the sleeve projecting inward into the interior of the shade or reflector and the shouldered end of the sleeve offsetting from the outer face thereof. The sleeve 5 is mounted in the hole 4 so that its threads 6 project wholly into the interior of Specification of Letters Patent.

the shade or reflector 3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but only partly thereinto as shown in Fig. 3, it being immaterial, so far as the purpose of my invention is concerned, whether the projection of the sleeve into the shade is sufficient to locate all of its threads 6 within the interior thereof or not. The length of the sleeve, that is, the distance between its threads (3 and shoulder 7, is pro portioned to the distance between the threads 8 andshoulder 9 of the sleeve 10 of the socket of a standard incandescent electric lamp so that when. the threads 8 at the open end of the sleeve 10 are engaged with the threads 6 of the sleeve 5, the shoulder 9 of the sleeve 10 abuts against the shoulder 7 of the sleeve 4. After the said shoulders have been brought into contact, any further turning of the sleeve 10 in the sleeve 5 binds their threads and prevents the sleeve 10, and hence the socket, from unscrewing.
By mounting the assembling-sleeve 5 in the shade or reflector 3 so that its threaded inner end projects into the same, the socket sleeve 10 is correpondingly carried inward with respect to the center of the interior of the shade or reflector from which it follows that the lamp bulb 11 when screwed from within the shade or reflector into the threaded inner end of the socket-sleeve, will be positioned centrally within the shade or reflector, or more nearly so than in similar devices of the prior art, to obvious advantage, not only as to appearance, but also as to efficiency, since the more nearly the lamp is located within the center of the shade or reflector, the more perfect the action thereof in the reflection of the light of the lamp.
Heretofore, so far as I am aware, the threaded means employed for mounting a shade or reflector upon the socket of an incandescent electric lamp have been located entirely outside of the shade or reflector itself, entailing a construction both bulky in appearance, uneconomical of space, expensive, and inefficient in so far as it necessitates the location of the lamp bulb one side of the center of the reflector or shade. These objections I have overcome by mounting the assembling-sleeve in the reflector so as to project its threaded end within the same.
In describing my invention, I have spoken of it as applied to shades or reflectors, the
Word shade, however, might have been used in a generic sense to cover reflectors as well as shades, for the reason that many reflectors are also shades, and for the reason that many shades are also reflectors.
I do not limit my invention to parabolic reflectors as shown, though it will probably have its largest use in such connection.
1. The combination with a shade or reflector for incandescent electric lamps, of an assembling-sleeve having its inner end threaded, mounted in a hole in the said shade or reflector with its threaded inner end projecting within the same and its outer end projecting beyond the exterior surface thereof, and a socket-sleeve having its open end threaded for engagement With the threads of the said assembling-sleeve at a point within the reflector, and also formed with an abutment shoulder for engagement with the projecting outer end of the assembling-sleeve.
2. The combination with a parabolic reflector or shade for incandescent electric lamps, the said shade or reflector being formed near its edge with a hole, of an assembling-sleeve mounted in the said hole and having its inner end threaded and projecting into the shade or reflector and its outer end formed with a shoulder and projecting from the outer surface thereof, a socket-sleeve having its open inner end threaded for engagement at a point within the shade or reflector with the threads 01' the said assembling-sleeve and formed with a shoulder for engagement at a point Without the shade or reflector with the shoulder at the outer end of the said assemblingsleeve.
