Description

C. E. BUTCHER.
BROOM HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 13. 1918.

EMTED STATEg A NT oFFrcE.
, p acon-HOLDER.
To all'whomit may concern: i r Be it knownthat 1,0I-IARLES E. BUTCHER, a citizen ofrthe'United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson, State of Tennessee, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled' in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7 V
This invention is an im'provement in receptacles and has particular reference to a broom holder. I
Anobject ofthe invention is to provide an improved holder for brooms which maybe attachecl to a suitable support, such as a wall, and constructed to yieldably retain a broom therein so that the same may be readily and quickly withdrawn from the holder.
Another and more specific object is the provision of a holder having clamping or holding sections portions of which form the front/thereof and which are yieldably held in engagement with broom so that a pull upon the handle thereof will force the sections apart and permit of the withdrawal of the broom from the holder.
A further object is the provision of a holder of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and eflective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed. i
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
rig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. D
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section on V the line 4- 1 of Fig. 1.
The broom holder is i n the drawing in what is now believed to be its preferred form which consists of a plate 5 which forms the back of the holder or receptacle and which'is tapered longitudinally to conform substantially to the shape of a broom head and said plate is provided adjacent its upper edge and centrally thereof with an opening 6 for receiving a suitable fastener 7 utilized Specification of Letters Patent.
A neationmea'ira is, 191s. serial'no. 234,191;
Patented o r. 14., 1919.
to -at-tach the holder or receptacle to a wall or other supportwhereby the same will be suspended in a position which will permit of the broom being placed therein and withdrawn therefrom.
The holder further comprises a pair of complemental sections 8 each of which is formed from arectangular sheet of material and bent upon itself longitudinally to provide the back plate engaging flange 9 the inner free edge of which is preferably arranged in parallel relation to the inner edge ofthe opposite flange 9 and the section is pivoted to the plate adjacent its upper end by means ofa small" bolt 10 extending through the flange 9 and havin a nut 11 threaded thereon and engagealile with the front face of the plate 5 whereby to maintain the parts in operative position. Each section is bent lon itudinally upon a line which extends parallel with the adjacent longitudinal edge of the plate 5 and the bent portion of the section is arranged in close proximity to said edge so that the latter will form an abutment or stop to limit the inward movement of the section toward the other section. By so bending the sec- .tions each of the same is provided with a front flange 13 which is disposed in spaced overlapping relation with respect to the front face of the plate 5 and the flanges 13 of the sections combined to form the front of the holder or receptacle whereby to retain a broom in position between the same and the back plate 5. The adjacent inner edges of the flanges 13 are preferably spaced apart and disposed in parallel relation for a portion of their lengths to form a handle receiving opening 14. The remainder of the edges of the flanges 13 are cut on upwardly diverging lines to provide a broom head receiving opening 15 and it will be a parent that by the provision of these openings 14 and 15 it will be possible to insert a broom laterally into the holder or receptacle and then releasing the same to be held in position by the sections 8. The distance be tween the bent portions of the sections at their lower ends is sufficiently narrow to prevent the broom from falling out of the holder when placed in position therein when said sections are in their normal positions.
Means are provided for yieldably maintaining the sections 8 in their normal positions so that the same will have a clamping action upon the broom in the holder and said means Copies of this patent may be obtained for -to their normal positions.
is preferably in the form of a coil spring 16 having its ends secured to the back or rear flanges 9 of the sections 8 adjacent the lower ends thereof so as to draw said sections to ward each other against the pressure'caused by the weight of the broom in the holder."
When it is desired to Withdraw the broom I detached from the holder whereupon the spring 16 will again return the sections 8 What is claimed is I A a A broom holder comprising a plate adapted to'be secured to a support, a pair of complementary broom clamplng sections transs five cents each, by Washington, ILG.
versely curved into co ncavo convex forma tion and disposed at opposite sldes of the plate with 't'he' edge portions of the plate extending into their concavity, pivoting devices engaged through oneend of the clamping sections and through a corresponding portion of the plate to hold the clamping sections .eachdvith a longitudinal edge portion against the rearward face of the plate and with its other longitudinal edge portion spaced from the front of the plate, said clamping sections being thus mounted for free swinging movement of their free'ends toward and away from each other; and
meansfor yieldably resistingsuch swinging movement. l i 1 j T i In testimony whereofyl affix ture, in the presence of two witnesses CHARLES E.'BUTC HER.
