Be it known that I, RUSSELL R. Cons, a citizen of the United States, residingat or-cester, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and Improved Handles for renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel construction for metal wrench handles, and more particularly to the manner and means for internally supporting the tubular shell or hollow grip portion of the handle in connection with the handle-frame and wrench bar shank, as more fully hereinafter explained; the object being to provide a construction thatcan be economically manufactured, and which shall be efficient, strong and durable for use.
I attain these objects by a wrench-handle embodying the peculiar construction illustrated by the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved wrench-handle, the exterior shell be ing shown in section. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section at line V V on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a side View of the tip end member separately. Fig. 4 is a transverse section at line Z Z on Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse section at line W W on Fig. 1. Fig. (5 is a transverse section at line X X on Fig. 1, with the exterior tubular member omitted, and Fig. 7 is a transverse section at line Y Y on Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, numeral 1 indicates the wrench-bar and 2 the wrench-barshank, formed with parallel transversely rounded edges as heretofore practised. H indicates the cast metal handle-frame composed of the neck-supporting ferrule 3, having the reduced end and shoulder 5, the integrally attached longitudinal edge-embracing members 6 extending parallel with each other along the rounded edges of the shank 2, and connected, near their upper part across the bar space, by integrally formed tie-plates 7; the lower ends of said edgeembracing members being unconnected with each other, butnotched on their outer corners 8.

invention the tip or end member 12 is provided with longitudinally projecting tongues 13, having a space 14 between. them equal to the flatwise thickness of the bar-shank. Said tongues are edgewisedisposed to fit the space between the shank and inner surface of the shell, and extend longitudinally along the sides of the shank nearly to the pin, 16, or approximately about half the length of the shell, see Fig. 1. The tip 12 is formed with a circumferential reduced portion 17 that fits within the end of the tubular member; and with a shoulder 15 against which the end of said tubular member abuts when the parts are in position.
When assembling the parts of the wrench the handle-frame H is slipped endwise onto the wrench-bar shank 2; its inner surfaces fitting snugly against the edges and sides thereof. The external tubular grip-member 10 is next slipped over the handle-frame and brace members 9, bringing its end onto the reduced part of the ferrule and against the shoulder 5. The tip 12 is then assembled by introducing the tongues 18 into the spaces between the shank 2 and tubular member 10 and driving it up until the reduced poition 17 enters and the shoulder 5 abuts firmly against the end of the tube. The end of the shank is then riveted at the outside of the tip to permanently unite the parts.
This improved construction produces an efficiently strong wrench handle of comparatively light weight; one which is simple, economical and convenient for manufacture,
since the several operations for fitting and assembling the parts can be readily performed, chiefly by machinery, and requiring but a small amount of labor.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a Wrench handle the combination with the wrench-bar shank having straight side surfaces, and a grip-forming shell consisting of uniform straight drawn tubing, of a tip-end member provided With a plurality of integral longitudinal tongues that extend into the interior of the handle, the inner faces of said tongues contacting With the sides of the Wrench-bar-shank and their outer faces contacting with the interior of said grip-forming tube, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a Wrench-handle, in combination, a wrench-bar-shank, a metal handle-frame consisting of a neck-supporting ferrule with integrally formed edge-embracing members extending longitudinally therefrom, intee grally united by cross-plates having outwardly projecting brace lugs thereon, an external tubular grip-member having longitudinally straight inner surfaces, and a tip end member provided with longitudinally projecting tongues arranged on its inner face and extending Within the tubular gripmember, with their inner and outer edges respectively seated against the surface of the shank and the interior of the tubular grip member.
3. A handle for screw Wrenches, comprising a comparatively thin straight tubular metal shell of approximately uniform thickness, a handle frame including a neck-supporting ferrule With integrally attached longitudinal shank-embracing edge-members, cross-plates integrally uniting said edge members near their upper ends, laterally outstanding lugs upon said cross-plates, a tip-end member provided With edgeWisedisposed longitudinal tongues that extend into the tubular shell for approximately one-half its length, the space between said tongues equaling the thickness of the barshank, and the combined breadth of said tongues and space equaling the inner diameter of the tubular shell.
