PICKER-STICK CHECK FOR LOOMS.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN /V. HERBERT and J AMEs A. AN REWS, citizens of the United States, residing at Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picker-Stick Checks for Looms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a picker stick check for looms and among other objects it seeks to provide an improved check or cushion for preventing the rebounding of the picker sticks in an eflicient manner.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed check consisting of only two metal parts and a flexible strap or belt.

The invention further resides in the features of construction and the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure l is a fragmentary elevation of the lay of a loom showing the invention applied thereto. 7

Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a bracket support fixed to the outer ends of the lay of the loom forming the shuttle box, and 2 and 3 a pair of substantially parallel and downwardly extending arms. This fixture or bracket with its downwardly extending arms, constitutes the outer part of the picker stick check, the inner part being carried by the inner or reverse side of the shuttle box and consists of a bracket or fixture 4.

This latter fixture extends downwardly and is equipped with a pair of outwardly extending guide flanges 5 between which is arranged a spring pressed clamp 6. A shaft 7 mounted in the guide flanges 5 pivotally supports the clamp 6 and a coiled spring 8 encircles the shaft and urges the clamp adjacent the belt'9 to hold the belt against movement in one direction and permit free movement in the other direction. I

An endless belt 9 is passed beneath the clamp 6 about the picker stick l0 and between the arms 2 and 3. In this connection it will be noted that the clamp 6 opens to release the belt when a pull in one direction is exerted and closes to securely hold the belt whena reverse pull is exerted. Itwill also be noted thatthe arms 2 and 3 bind or bite into the belt in cooperation with the clamp to more firmly hold the belt. This coiiperation is shown in Fig. 3 in which the picker stick has received the shuttle and is about to return or throw it across the loom through the shed into the opposite box.

When the, picker stick is throwing the shuttle and approaches its extreme inward position, as depicted in Fig. 4, it engages the belt which arrests the stick with more or less of a cushioned effect. The belt being endless and released from the binding arms 2 and 3 and clamp 6 is free to move and cushion the stick very efliciently. The plate 7 slot 12. The arm 3 has a lateral extension 13 which is slotted at 14 to receive a bolt 15 and thereby provide an adjustable mounting for the arm whereby it may be spaced more or less from the fixed arm to vary the degree of friction on the strap or belt pass ing therebetween.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A picker stick check COIIIPIiSiDg a bracket part having a strap guide equipped with vertically spaced horizontal flanges, said strap guide inclined inwardly toward the inner limit of movement of the stick, an endless strap passed therethrough, a spring actuated clamp arranged within the guide and operable to clamp the strap when moved outwardly and to release the strap when moved inwardly, and other means cooperable with the clamp and arranged to engage strap on the opposite side of the picker stick.

A picker stick check comprising a bracket part having vertically spaced horizontal flanges extending outwardly to form a strap guide, an endless strap passed there through, a spring actuated clamp arranged within the guide and operable to clamp the strap when moved outwardly and to release the strap when moved inwardly, and a second bracket part spaced from the first part and having spaced arms straddling the strap to bind thereon when engaged by the stick in its outward movement, and means adjustably spacing the arms more or less apart to vary the frictional binding thereof 0 the strap.

3. A picker stick check comprising a bracket part having a strap guide, a strap passing therethrough, means for holding the strap fixed in the guide against movement Copies of this patent may be obtained for when the strap is engaged by the stick in its outward movement, and a second bracket part spaced from the first part and having spaced arms straddling the strap to bind thereon when engaged by the stick in its outward movement, said strap passing about one arm only whereby to be free of the companion arm when the stick is approaching its inner limit of movement.
