VEST-POCKET LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1919.
Application filed October 14, 1918. Serial No. 257,923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lnoronn .BAOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, and I, ELIAs KfrBLER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New York, county of New York, vand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vest-Pocket Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door locking devices and particularly toi types adapted to be carried in the pocket or the personal belongings of the user.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a lock which may be readily at tached to a door of ordinary construction and without the use of any tools or appliances whatever.
A further object is to provide a door lock which may be readily transported, the same being adapted to fold compactly into a smallspace when not 1n use or extended into operative position in an easy manner.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is sectional view taken through a conventional type of door and j amb and indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lock in a partially extended position.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the same when in a folded position, and
Fig. 4 shows the cam and plunger in detail, partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, the door is indicated by the numeral 10, and the j amb 11, a relatively narrow space 12, being between the edge of the door and the inner surface of the jamb as is usual.
The invention comprises a flat tubular casing 14, in which is operatively engaged a bar or bolt 15, which neatly fits the casing.
The outer rearedge' of the casing is rolled V upwardly forming an element 16 of a hinge containing the pin 17, with which it is engaged with the other element 18 of the hinge, formed with a plate 20, having an angularly turned end 21 into serrations or teeth 22, having relatively sharp points adapted to engage in the wooden jamb 11 of the door frame.
Set in the bar 15, is a screw the head 24 of which projects outwardly beyond a slot 25, formed longitudinally through the side of the casing and which limits the action of the bar 15," preventing it from coming entirely out of the casting.
In the form shown Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, a pair of opposed lugs 27 are secured upon the outer surface of the bar 15, the lugs carry a pivot pin 28 on which is pivotally engaged a lever 30, the same projecting out in the manner of a handle, while the opposite end of the lever, formed at right angles with the main portion, is adapted to contact with the head 82 of a stud 33, having an opposite disposed head 34, which may be covered with rubber or the like to prevent marring and is adapted to make contact with the outer surface of the door when the lock is in an operative position.
The inner head 32 is slidably engaged in an elongatedslot 35, formed centrally in the bar near its outer end, and which maintains the stud 33 in position, but permits it to be moved outwardly so to engage with the inner angular end of the lever when operated, or to be retracted so as to permit the handle to be folded as shown in Fig. 3, when the lock is not in use, the lugs and lever being slidably received within an open recess 36, extending into the end of the casing 14.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a lock of the class described the combination with a flat tubular casing having an open recess and a longitudinally extending side slot, a bar slidably engaged in said casing, a screw head on said bar projecting outwardly through the longitudinal slot in said casing for limiting the movement of said bar relative to said casing, a plate hingedly engaged to the end of said casing, said plate having angular teeth formed therewith adapted to engage with the woodwork of a door jamb, a pair of opposed lugs secured to the outer face of said bar, a pivot pin carried by said lugs, a lever pivotally received in the open recess of said casing, engaged on said pin, a double-headed stud substantially as described and for the purmovably mounted in said bar, one of its pose set forth. 10 heads being adapted to be engaged by said In testimony whereof We have aflixed our lever, and the other, rubber covered one, to signatures.
make contact with the outer face of a door, LEOPOLQ BACI-I.
said lugs and lever adapted of being slidably ELIAS KUBLER.
