Description
6.1. BENDER.
PEDAL LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED DEILH, 1920.
1,398,122. Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
UNITED STATES CARL J. FENDER, OF GNADENHUTTEN, OHIO.
PEDAL-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
Application filed December 14, 1920. Serial No. 430,722.
To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, CARL J. BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gnadenhutten, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pedal-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a pedal locking means for automobiles.
lily improvement is especially adapted for locking the pedals and the brake lever of the well-known small type of cars, of ,the Ford construction. and it is my aim to produce a pedal and brake lever lock which shall be of an extremely simple construction, cheaply manufactured, and marketed. and thoroughly efiicient for the purpose for which it is devised.
The foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
In the drawings Figure l is a view showing the application of the improvement between the clutch pedal and the brake lever of an automobile.
Fig. 2 .is a view showing the improvement arranged around the foot pedals.
3 is a view showing the improvement in its open position.
Fig. t is a similar view showing the improvement in its locked position.
As cheapness of construction is one of the primary aims of this invention, the body portion of my improvement is formed from a single strip of strap iron, of suitable gage to provide a yoke-shaped member 1. The arms 2 and l-l of the member 1 are arranged in parallelism, and the connecting element between the arms is curved, as at The arm 2, adjacent the outer end thereof has two spaced openings therethrough, while the arm 3, opposite the said openings in the arm 2, has an elongated slot 5. Passing through the openings in the arm 2, and de signed to have their connected ends received through the slot 5, are the arms of a U shaped hasp 6. The free ends of the arms of the hasp are connected together by a flat plate 7, and this plate is designed to rest against the outer face of the arm 2, when the hasp is passed through the slot 4:. When in such position the hasp is engaged by a hasp lock 8.
While the improvement is preferably constructed of strap iron. the same embodies a natural resiliency and is of great strength.
The lock 8 is removed from the hasp, and the hasp is brought to the position illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings to permit of the arms of the yoke being arranged be tween the head and shank of the clutch lever 9, and around the brake lever 10, in the application illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The hasp is then moved through the slot 5, and the hasp lock is applied. The brake lever has been thrown to forward position. and must remain in this position before the clutch pedal 9 can be operated to start the car, and as both the brake lever and the clutch are not designed to be moved in unison. it will be seen that the illicit operation of the car will be prevented.
in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the device is shown applied to the shanks of the foot pedal brake. reverse and clutch levers, and as these levers cannot be operated in unison, the car cannot be properly operated until the pedal lock is removed therefrom.
Having described the invention. 1 claim A pedal lock, for the purpose herein described, comprising a yoke of strong but resilient material, one of the arms of the yoke, adjacent the end thereof having spaced openings therethrough, the second arm having an elongated slot opposite said openings, a U-shaped hasp having its arms slidable through the openings and designed to be passed through the slot, a flat plate connecting the arms of the hasp and designed to contact with the outer face of one of the arms of the yoke when the hasp is passed through the slot in the second arm of the yoke, and said hasp designed to receive the hasp look when in its last mentioned position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CARL J. BEN DER.
