This invention relates to combined rocking and revolving chairs, and more particularly to such chairs in which there is a universal rocking motion.

The particular adaptation which has been selected for illustration is a chair or device specifically adapted for use by small Olllldren, whereby they may be placed in a safe place and amused while at the same time affording them opportunity for necessary exercising without attendant dangers.

The invention consists broadly in the provision of a rocking base with a surmounted chair or seat, which is capable of a revolving motion in relation to the rocking platform. More specifically it consists of a rocking platform surmounting a segment of a sphere whereby universal rocking movement of the platform may be obtained, and a chairor seat mounted upon an auxiliary platform, which is capable of horizontally revolving motion with respect to the rocking platform.

The object of the invention is the production of an amusement] chair and exerciser,

particularly for children of tender age.

Another object of the invention is the provision in such a chair of adequate safeguards against injury to the user. Other and further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The numeral 1 is used to designate the rocking platform, which is made of wood, surmounting a bowl 2 in the form' of a segment of a, sphere, which bowl is of sheet material. The bowl is provided with a flange 3, which is attached to the under side of the rocking platform by screws 4. A

an increased diameter to provide a projecting portion around the bowl, so that in the rocking motion of the chair the periphery of the platform will act as a stop or -limit, insuring safety in the use of the device.

Revolubly mounted upon the rocking platform is an auxiliary platform 6 upon which is provided a seat 7 comprising a bottom 8, uprights 9 and a body support 10. The auxiliary or revolving platform is extended forward from the open portion of the seat proper sufficiently to receive the legs of the occupant, but otherwise conforms generally to the contour of the'seat proper. This seat is attached to the revolving platform by screws or anyother suitable means.

The rocking and revolving platforms are connected together by a coupling 11, which .is placed centrally of the rocking platform.

The revolving platform, however, is mounted eccentrically of the rocking platform in order to secure equilibrium when the chair is occupied that the rocking motion of the devicemaybe produced with slight effort upon the part of the occupant.

The" coupling may be of any approved form for permitting a rotary movement between the parts, but the one chosen for illustration comprises a male member 12 and a female member 13. The male. member is provided with a base '14 which isins'et in the bottom of the revolving platform, said base having projecting therefrom a stud 15 provided with an annular groove 17. The female member is mounted centrally upon the rocking platform and is provided with an upstanding portion 18"having a bore 19 into which the stud of the -male member takes. A screw 20 is screwed into a threaded aperture inthe upstanding portion 18 and the reduced end thereof fits within the groove 17 of the male member when the parts are assembled, there being clearance lot sufficient between the screw end and the groove to permit easy revolving motion.

Mounted upon the rocking platform is a hand rail 21 supported by brace members 22, which are so curved as to permit of ample space for the movement of the revolving platform and yet bring the hand rail 21 into easy access of the occupant of the device. The brace members are screw threaded at one end to screw into the hand rail as shown at 23 and are provided at the upper end with feet 24 by which they are attached by screws to the rocking platform.

In the use of the chair the occupant is placed in the seat proper and strapped therein if desirable with the legs projecting beyond the seat and supported upon the front portion of the revolving platform. The offset mounting of the revolving platform upon the rocking platform insures when the device is occupied an upright position thereof. A slight movement of the body of the occupant will cause the device to rock upon the bowl member and another slight movement of the body of the occupant will cause the completing of the rocking cycle. If the occupant desires to face in any other direction, the hand rail, which is conveniently located, is grasped and the revolving platform caused to turn upon the rocking platform by a slight pull in the desired direction. The curvature of the bowl is suchthat the rocking motion produced is even and gentle.

It is obvious that a device has been devised, particularly for young children, which will afford a means of exercising as well as amusement, and that the easy curvature ofthe bowl together with the projecting periphery of the rocking platform and the provision of the hand rail and extended foot board contribute to making the device a safe one for the use of children of tender years.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An exercising chair comprising a universal rocking base, a chair or seat mounted upon said base and having independent rotary movement thereon, and a hand rail supported by the base and surrounding said chair or seat.

2. In a combined rocking and revolving chair, the combination of a universally rocking base comprising a spherical rocking surface and a platform extended beyond the rocking surface to limit the rocking movement, a revolving seat support mounted upon the said platform, a seat or chair supported thereon, said support being extended beyond the seat member to provide a support for the legs of the occupant, and a hand rail supported by the platform and accessible to the occupant of the seat.

3. In a combined rocking and revolving chair, the combination of a rocking base comprising a section of a sphere, and a revolving chair mounted directed above said rocking base and eccentrically thereof.

4. In an amusement or exercising device, the combination of a universally rocking base, a seat, means for mounting said seat upon said base to freely revolve thereon, and means supported on said base and with relation towhich the seat is revoluble for permitting engagement by the occupant of the seat to pivotally turn the seat upon the base.

5. In a combined rocking and revolving chair, the combination of a universally rocking base, a revolving occupant support comprising body and leg sections and so mounted upon said base that when occupied the leg portion will substantially counterbalance the body portion.

6. In a combined rocking and revolving chair, the combination of a universally rocking base comprising a spherical rocking surface and a platform extended beyond the rocking surface to limit the rocking movement, and a revolving occupant support comprising a seat portion and an extended leg portion and so mounted upon said platform that when occupied the leg portion will substantially counterbalance the body portlon.
