Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFEICE. L
JOHN W. WESTBROOKS AND ALVEUS J. CLEMMONS, OF ABERDEEN, MISS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 39,219, dated May 20,1873; application filed March 1, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. WEST- BRooKs and ALvEUs J. GLEMMoNs, both ot" Y Aberdeen, Monroe county, Mississippi, have invented an Improved Gate, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate shut, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the gate open.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of gates in such a manner as to enable the gate to slide loosely in a vertical rack that is hinged to a stationary post, instead of attaching the gate directly to the the hinges, this improved construction having the eiiect to relieve the hinges of a great part ofthe weight of the gate. lo these ends the invention consists in the construction and arrangement ot' parts which we will now prooecd to describe.
In the accompanying drawing A is the rack aforesaid. the same being hinged to the vertical post B. The bars C sit loosely in the orices of the rack A, so that the gate can both.
slide lengthwise and also have an oscillating motion in a vertical plane, and ,be therefore capable of resting on the grooved guide-post D, planted midway between the two endposts B E, and also capable ot' resting at its front end, when swung to one side, upon the ground. By this means the hinges are relieved from the greater portion of the weight ofthe gate. rIhe post E is grooved on its inner side to receive the end of the gate when shut. F is a short catch, pivoted to the upright G, near its top. When the gate is shut the catch F drops ing past the uprights I gives a good handle by which to raise the catch. The rear portion of the bar H forms a long oscillating support for the gate to slide on.
When both catches are used the upper one forms a safety or night catch, making the gate doubly secure.
It' the catch J is dispensed with the har H still serves as a slide, and acts in conjunction with the catch F. y i
Ve claim as our invention- The combination of the ixed post B, rack A hinged to the said post, bar H, pivoted within the said rack and extending between the uprights I of the gate, so as to furnish a support for the latter to slide on, .and the sliding and oscillating gate, substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
