device includes a pair of clamps indicated p and claimed,
ELIAS D. G, 01 PRAIRIE DU SAC, WISCONSIN TAIL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 27, 1921.
Application filed April 14, 1920. Serial No. 373,876.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be itknown that I, ELIAS D. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prairie du Sac, in the county of Sank and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Tail-Holder, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device especially designed for holding a cows tail, to prevent the swishing of the animals tail during the milking operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may readily and easily be applied, and one Which in no way will cause discomfort to the animal to which the device is applied.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the hereinafter described it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing details of construction Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of j the holder, constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a view of the elements of the device as disassembled.
Fig. 3. illustrates a longitudinal sectional view through the jaws. Q
Referring to the drawing indetail, the
at 5, the clamps being of the spring jaw type and connected by means of a relatively long coiled spring indicated at 6. 7
Each of these clamps'includes a pair of opposed jaws indicated. at 7, and as shown the jaws are, provided with curved portions 8, the ends thereof terminating in enlargements 9 so that a substantially oval opening is formed between the opposed jaws, when the enlargements 9 are moved into engagement with each other.
The opposite end of each of the jaws '7 provides the handle end thereof, the inner surfaces of each of the jaws being cut away as at 10 to provide clearances, permitting the handles to be grasped by the operator, and moved toward each other, to accomplish the opening of the jaws, to permit the cows tallto be inserted therebetween.
A cut out portion 10 tially intermediate the length of each of the aws, the cut out portions of the opposed aws cooperating to provide a housing for the spring actuating member 11 which includes a central coiled spring section 12, integral arms 13 extending at right "angles with relation to the central coiled portion 12, and the laterally extending end portions 14:, which in operation are disposed within the cut out portions 15 of the jaw sections for normally urging the enlargements 9 into engagement with each other to maintain the clamping members, hasits ends positioned in the eyes 16 of the pins 17, which pins are of sizes to permit them to be passed through the coiled portions 12 of the spring actuating members, the free ends of the pins being bent at right angles as at 18, whereby the coiled spring 6 is secured to the clamps.
In order that the jaws will be maintained in properrelation with each other, a relatively small connecting wire 19 is provided, which embraces portions of the jaw members, as indicated by Fig. 1, the same contacting with the spring actuating members to further insure against displacement there of with relation to the clamps.
In the operation of the device, one of the clamping members is clamped around the cows tail, theopposite clamp being clamped to theflank, or hamstring, on the opposite side of'the cowfrom the milking side, with the result that the animal is prevented from swishing its tail during the milking operation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A clamp including opposed jaws pivotally connected together, a spring actuating member associated with the jaws, said spring actuating member including a central coiled spring section and arms, the arms adapted to embrace the opposed jaws, a relatively In testimony that I claim the foregoing small wire member embracing the jaws, a as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signa- 10 pin extending through the central coiled ture in the presence of two witnesses.
spring section and having its ends extend- ELIAS D KING ing at right angles for securing the pin I T thereto, said wire member having connec- Witnesses tion with the pin and said pin having an eye. J. J. PFANNSTIEHL,
forming a part thereof. V T. M. MoULp.
