EXTENSION-Mienoivrnrnn.
' Appiicaiton inea october 7 To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE GILLnsPIn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw and Statev of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension- Micrometers, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in micrometers and has for its primary object to provide aninstrument of this character features of construction whereby the position of the gage pin carrying jaws may bevvaried to adapt ythe micrometer for use in connection with work having a wide yvariance in size. j j
Another objectiS the provision of a micrometer-of thischaracter embodying Such means as will afford and reliably maintain the relative adjustment of the jaws.
-With these and other objects in view as will appear aS the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents improved micrometer.
Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 represents a transverse -sectional view through the Shanks of the` jaws taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4t represents a fragmentary perspective view of one terminal of one of the jaw Shanks, and j Fig. l5 represents a perspective view, partly broken away, of the terminal of the a side elevation of the other jaw.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate the opposed'curved jaws of the improved micrometer which are provided with terminal eX- tensions 7 and 8, respectively, receiving the relatively stationary and adjustable gage pins 9 and l0. As in the usual construction of micrometers the relatively adjustable pin 10 is provided with an approved type of adjusting device designated generally by ther numeral 11 which is adequately mounted upon the jaw 6.
The companion jaws 5 and 6 are provided specification of Letters Patent.

Shanks 12 and 13, re..
kThe Shanks 12 and 13 are provided with j registering longitudinal Slots 14 receiving the shank portions 15 of retaining screws the headed terminals 16 of which are disposed oppositely and engaged with the opposed Shanks 12 and 13 adjacent the opposite ends thereof. Shanks opposite the heads are provided with screw threads and thumb huts 17 are thread` ed upon these'terminals of the screws and gaskets 18 are interposed between the thumb nuts and jaw Shanks. y c
The inner surface of the jaw shank l2 is formed with a series of uniformly spaced and transversely extending recesses 19 for receiving a Series of transversely extending ribs or projections 21 carried by the Shank 13 whereby the jaw Shanks and jaws are rigidly locked in adjusted position. Upon proper adjustment of the thumb nuts 17 the projections or ribs 21 may be withdrawn from the recesses 19 and the Shanks 12 and 13 adjusted relatively to obtain the desired adjustment of the jaws'5 and 6 and the gage pins 9'and l0, the fine adjustment of the pin 10, as will be understood, being secured by proper adjustment of the device 11. To further insure proper movement of the Shanks 12 and 13 and prevent relative lateral movement thereof whichmight affect the .adjustment of the pins 9 and 10, a guide rib or projection 22 is formed upon the inner edge of the shank 13, or that longitudinal edge disposed adjacent the jaws 5 and 6. The other shank 12 is formed with a longitudinal recess 23 receiving the rib 22 and thus insuring proper relation of the jaw Shanks.
What I claim is:
1. In a micrometer, a pair of relatively jaws, gage pins carried thereby, Said jaws being provided with adjustably related Shanks, and interlocking means carried by the Shanks to lock the latter in adjusted position when assembled.
2. In a micrometer, a pair of companion jaws, formed with shank portions, interlocking means carried by the Shanks to lock the latter in adjusted position when assembled, and means to releasably Secure the Shanks in assembled relation.
3.' In a micrometer, a pair of companion The terminals of the two of the shanks arranged in angular jaws, superposed shanks Jformed on said jaws, one of the shanks having a series oi' uniformly spaced recesses, transverse ribs carried by the other shank engaging said recesses, said ribs being arranged to prevent relative movement of the shanks in the direction ot their adjustment, and means :tor
clamping the shanks together to .maintain the ribs in position in the recesses.
1l. A micrometer comprising a pair of companion jaws, Shanks formed on said jaws and adapted for relative adjustment, a series of equidista-nt transverse ribs carried by one relation to the direction ot adjustment of the jaws, the other shank having a series of recesses adapted to receive said ribs, said shanks having longitudinal registeringslots therein, means movably engaged through said slots for clamping the shanks together and maintaining the ribs in position in the recesses.`
5.. A micrometer comprising apair of companion jaws, shanks vformed on said jaws disposed in superposed relation, transverse ribs carried by one shank, arranged in angular relation to the direction of adjustment of the jaws, the other shank being provided withrecesses adapted to receive said ribs to rigidly lock the Shanks against movement along the line of adjustment of the jaws, said shanks having longitudinal registering slots therein, screws slidably engaged in said slots, and means coacting with said screws to draw the Shanks together and maintain the latter in relatively adjusted position.
6. A micrometer comprising a pair of companion jaws, Shanks `formed on said jaws, means for securing the Shanks in adjusted position, one ot' the shanks having longitudinal and transverse Vgrooves therein, and transverse ribs formed on the other shank engaged in said grooves to maintain the shanks in alinement. v ,7. A micrometer comprising a pair of companion jaws, shanks carried by vsaid jaws, transverse ribs carried by one shank, the other shank having a series of transverse recesses receiving said ribs, the recessed shank having a longitudinal groove therein,
a longitudinal guide rib carried by the ribbed shank engaging in said groove to maintain the shanks in alinement, and means to clamp the Shanks together to maintain the latter in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, l affix my signature hereto.
GEORGE GILLESPIE.
