UNITED STATES PATENT QEIICE.`

IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR DENTAL PURPOSES.
` ,Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,370, dated April 29, 1873; application filed March 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
l Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BLAKE, of
city and county of San Francisco, State of x splifornia, have invented a certain new and lseful Clamp for Dental Purposes; and I do lereby declare that the following, when taken n connection with the accompanying drawing, with letters and figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
In the drawing are represented various forms of my improved clamp.
In order that those skilled in the dental art and use of the rubber dam may be enabled to make and use my invention, I give the following description:
A represents my improved clamp, which is adapted for holding the rubber dam in place. It consists mainly of a strip of suitablemetal, having its ends suitably curved to fit the form of the tooth to which it is to be applied, and also properly serrated, it being bent in proper form to cause the ends to clasp the tooth when in place without preventing ready access to the opening which is to be lled. Different forms. are required, of course, for different teeth and for cavities differently located, but these necessary changes may, of course, be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. A, Figure 2, represents a clamp which is especially adapted for approximate cavities in molars. a represents a movable compress, which can be adjusted in any ordi-V nary position by means of the set-screw a2. Other sizes and forms of compresses may be used, as represented in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. B, Figs. 3 and 8, represents clamps adapted particularly for teeth decayed in their front or labial surfaces; one arm is provided with serrations, While the other is enlarged and perforated as shown. A, Fig. 4, represents a clamp which is perforated to adapt it to be readily held by the forceps.
rllhe described invention is very simple, and yet adapted to hold the darn securely in place and prevent moisture from interferingwith the operation of filling.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A rubber-dam clamp, provided with serrated jaws, adapted to grasp the tooth, substantially as described.
2. The construction of the clamp A with the adjustable compress a', as described.
3. The clamp B, having one end enlarged and perforated, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
UHAS. EDWARD BLAKE. Witnesses:
C. W. M. SMITH, PHILIP MAHLER.
