To all 'whom t concern l Be it known that I, CYRUS EVERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York l city, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings,
and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winding or Hoisting Engines, of which the following is a specification. L
My invention relates to new andnseful improvements in winding or hoisting engines. Important objects of the invention are to provide a multi-drum hoisting or winding engine which will be particularly useful in connection with load hoisting and.
'transferring cablewayS, which will be light in construction, and therefore easily portable, which will' be so constructed `that 1t may be readily supported and operated 'on a vertical or otherwise arranged spar orpost constituting a support for one end of a cableway, which may be conveniently mounted'in,
and dismounted from its operative position on such spar or post, 'and in which improved means will beprovided for connecting the drums to, and disconnecting them.v from asource of power. Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description.

Figure l is a view inside elevation of one type of cableway in connection with whichv cable 3, and by which the carriage is sup-v ported on said main cable, said carriage also carrying aguide pulley or sheave 8 for a purpose to be presently described. On the head spar 1, is arranged a rotary guide sheave 9, over which passes a traversing rope 10, the same extending parallel to the main cable 4.and around a guide pulleyl or sheave 11 on the tail spar 2, from 4which point said rope 10 isl doubled upon'itself, as at 10, and connected tothe carriage 6 in vany suitable manner as at12. This rope'lO is operable, when a ull is exerted thereon, to traverse the carriage along' the main cable or trackway 3 toward the tail spar or support -2. 13 designates a combined hoisting and traversing 4rope which is passed over a rotary sheave 'or'pulley 14 on the head spar, and
over the .sheave'or pulley 8 on the carriage,
from which point said rope de ends, as 4at 13,..for connection by any suita le means to a load to be hoisted and transported. This rope 13 is operable to lift the load and to traverse the carriage toward the 'head spar,
The above construction of cableway is illustrated and described merely by way of ex- -ent invention, nor is said invention limited such a cableway. l
I will now proceed to describe the improved winding or hoisting engine constituting my invention. 15 designates a su porting plate or bed adapted to be secured in vertical position to the head pole 1, said plate or bed being provided on its rear face with clamping members 16 adapted toengage the spar or pole 1, adjacent the bed plate, and with which clamping members coperate clamping plates 17 arranged to engage the supporting pole 1 on the opposite side from said clamping members 16 and be clamped in position by means of in its scope. tothe use in connection with headed bolts 18 passed through openings in the bed plate, and the clampmg members 16 from the outer side of said bed plate, the bolts having threaded outer ends which pass through openings in the said plates 17 and receive clamping nuts 19, by means of which the clampin members 16 and lates 17 may be made to rmly grip the polb 1 and hold the bed late rigidly in position on the same. 0n the ged plate isarranged and supported a rotary electric motor 21, the armature shaft 22 of which carries a pinion 23 which meshes with a gear 24 on a shaft 25, extending parallel tothe armature shaft and lhaving its ends mounted in bearings 26 on outwardly or horizontally projecting brackets 27 on bed plate 15. 21ZL designates a controller box for controlling the motor, said box being supported on a bracket member 20. Fixed to the shaft is a driving pinion 28 arranged in mesh with a gear 29 mounted at approximately the longitudito rock in bearin nal center of a horizontal shaft 30, mounted s 31 on side brackets 32 projecting lateral y from the bed plate 15. rllhe gear 29 is mounted to turn loosely on the shaft 30, and is held ,against endwise movement thereon by split collars 32 ari ranged on opposite sides of thehub of said gear, and seated in annular grooves 33 in said shaft, said split collars being immovable lengthwise of the shaft. -'ll`he gear 29 is provided on its opposite faces with cone friction clutch elements 34, 35, respectively,

4 ofthe drawings. 0n opposite sides of the gear 29 and mounted loosely on the shaft 30 to turn relative thereto, but capable of movement longitudinally thereof toward and away from the gear, are drums 36, 37, one of which is adapted to have wound thereon the line 10 and the other to have wound thereon the line 13. 'llhe inner head of each drum is provided with a lateral and outwardly projecting Bange, shown respectively at'38, 38', and each flange having an internal cone clutch face, which faces serve respectively, to engage with the elements 34 and 35 to connect the drums with the driving gear 29.
l will now describe improved means for causing movement of the drums lengthwise of the shaft 30, so as'toconnect either of the same with the driving gear 29, so that one of said drums will be driven positively, and to separate or disconnect the other of the drums from the gear so that said other drum will not be driven, and may be held against rotation. For this purpose the shaft 30 is rovided at its opposite ends outside the sa1d drums 36, 37 with thrust sleeves or collars 39, 40, threaded on the said shaft `by means of an internal thread in each sleeve or collar and an external thread 41 on the assegna wise of the shaft toward the drum 36 tothrust the latter into frictional engagement with the gear 29, while the sleeve 40 will be moved simultaneously along the shaft in the' same direction, but away from the drum 37 so as to relieve'the frictional clutch en-v gagement between the drum 37 and the gear 29, and permit the drum 37 to run free of said gear, this operation lserving to clutch the drum 36 in driving engagement with the gear, while the drum 37 is disconnected from the driving connection. lf the shaft 41 is rocked in the opposite direction from, that described,v the collar 39 will be moved away from its drum 36 to permit the frictional contact between Said drum and the gear to be relieved, while the sleeve 40 will be moved in the same direction to thrust the drum 37 into frictional driving engagement with vsaid gear. rllhis arrangement is such that when one drum vis in frictional driving connection with the gear 29, the other drum will be disconnected therefrom, and may run free, or be held byl a brake.
The outer face of each flange 38 on the drums constitutes an annular brake surface with each of which coperates a band brake shown at 42', 43, respectively, connected to the levers 44,' 45,. respectively, in a well known manner fixed to an o erating shaft 46 operable'by a hand lever 4 The levers 44, 45V are-so located circumferentially and angularly of shownin lFig. 3, that when the hand lever 47 is operated in one direction, the brake is applied to 'one of the drums, and on the other hand, the brake is relieved fromvthe other drum, while the reverse operation takes place when the lever 47 is moved in the reverse direction. By this arrangement either drum may be held under brake, and the 'other permitted'to run unretarded, for example, when the outhaul line 10 isv driven under power to outhaul the carriage, and its drum is connected to the driving gear, the drumV for the hoistin or outhaul line 13 will be disconnected Efrom the driving gear 29, to prevent slack in the hoisting line, while the carriage is being outhauled. rWhen the carriage is outhauled tothe desired position, the drum carrying the line 1() may be disconnected` from 'the gear 29' and held by the brake,while the drum carrying the hoisting and inhaul line 13 may be connected to the and may be held under brake, so as the shaft 46, for example, as p 'late the extent of movement thereof, and
thereby insure proper movement of the drums relative to the gear 29, I may provide each flange 48 with a plurality of the recesses 49, any one of which may independentl of the rotation of the shaft by rotation of e collar, be brought into position to be engaged by the pin 50 which is made removable for ,the purpose stated.
What Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: A
'1. In a winding engine, a shaft, a driving elementl loosely mounted on the shaft, a .drum loosely mounted on the shaft, friction lclutch faces providing a driving connection between said drum and said driving element, means whereby rocking of the shaft in one direction connects said friction clutch faces, and rocking in the opposite direction disconnects said friction clutch faces.
2. In a winding engine, a shaft, a driving element loosely mounted on the shaft, drums mounted loosely 0n the shaft on each lside of said element, friction clutch members for providing driving connection between each drum and said element, and means whereby rockin of said shaft connects one drum with the said element and disconhects the lother drum therefrom.
3. In a Winding engine, a shaft, a driving element loosely mounted on the shaft, drums mounted loosely on the shaft on each side of s'aid element,`friction clutch surfaces between said drums and said element, thrust members, and means whereby rocking ofthe shaft operates-:said thrust members to place said drums in driving connection with'the driving element.
4. In a winding engine, a shaft, a driving element loosely mounted on the shaft, drums mounted loosely on the shaft on eachside of said element, `friction clutch surfaces between said drums and said element, thrust members on the shaft, and means whereby rocking of the' shaft operates said thrust members to lacel said drums in driving connection with the ldriving element.
5. In a winding engine, a shaft, ay diiving element loosely mounted on the shaft, drums mounted loosely on the shaft on each side of said driving element, friction `clutch surfaces for providing a drivingconnection between each drum and said element, thrust members threaded on the shaft, and means whereby rocking of said shaft operates the thrust members to connect the drums with said driving element.
6. In a winding engine, a shaft, a driving element loosely mounted on the shaft, drums mounted loosely on the shaft on each side `o f said driving element, friction clutch surfaces for providing a driving connection between each drum and said element, thrust sleeves threaded on the shaft, and means whereby locking of said shaft operates the thrust sleeves to connect the drums with said driving element.
7. In a winding engine,.a shaft, a drivingA element loosely mounted on the shaft, drums mounted loosely on the shaft on each side respectively of said driving element, friction clutch faces for providing a driving connection between each drum and -said element, means whereby rocking of said shaft connects one drum with the said element, and disconnects the other drum therefrom, brakes operable on said drums, and operating means for the brakes whereby when one brake is applied the other is released.
8. In a winding engine, a 4shaft la driving element Tloosely mounted on the shaft, drums mounted loosely on the shaft on each side of said driving element, friction clutch surfaces for providing a driving connection between each drum and said element, thrust members threaded on the shaft, means to prevent rotation vof said thrust members, and means whereby rocking of said shaft operates the thrust members to connect the drums with said driving element.
9. In a winding engine, a shaft, a'driving element loosely mounted on the shaft, drums loosely mounted on the shaft on each side respectively of said drivingelement, friction clutch faces for providing a driving connection between each drum and said element, thrust sleeves threaded on the shaft and respectively engaging the opposite ends of said drums from the ends adjacent the driving element, the threads between the sleeves and the drums being .so directed to'cause the thrust sleeves to move simultaneously in the same direction, and manual `means for rocking said shaf whereby the thrust sleeves are moved to conn ct one drnm to the driving element, and to relieve the connection between the other drum and the driving element.
10. In a winding engine, a vertically disdrums mounted loosely on the shaft on opposite sides of said gear, friction clutch surfaces for providing a driving connection between said drums .and said gear, thrust mesme members on the drum shaft and manually 1n testimony whereof have hereunto operatlve means for rocking the drum shaft, signed my `name in the presence of two suband connections .between the thrust memscribng Wltnesses.
