DRAFTING-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 14;, 1921.
Application filed December 6, 1920. Serial No. 428,572.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VAINO LAnnI, a subject of Finland, residing at $eattle, 1n the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drafting-Tables, of whlch the following is a specificatlon.
My invention relates to improvements in drafting tables and the ob ect of my nvention is to provide a drafting table having a top which can be raised or lowered with facility and which is automatically locked in the raised position at any desired angle.
Another object is to provide a draftlng table with a top having cylindrical rollers disposed under and at both ends thereof whereby a roll of drawing paper, passing over-the top of said table, may be wound from one to the other of said rollers.
A further object is to provide novel looking means for securing the ends of the drawing paper roll within said rollers.
'A still further object is to provide a drafting table thatis substantial and durable 1n construction, simple and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily dismantled for shipment.
With the above and other ObJGCtS in veiw which will appear as the description proceeds the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
I accomplish these objects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a drafting table embodying the features of my invention; 7
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in central transverse vertical section,- showing the top in raised position; 1
Fig. 4c is a detail view in perspective of one of the rollers; a
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view in transverse vertical section showing the mean of securing the ends of the roll of drawing paper within the rollers; I
Fig. 6 is a detail View in perspective of one of the locking pawls for said rollers;
and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view in perspective showing the operative end of the trip spaced apart relation by a bar 12substan-- tially as shown. A bifurcated bracket 13 is centrally secured at its lower end to the bar 12.
The bifurcated supports 10 and 11 comprise solid members 14 and hollow members 15 for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
A shelf 16 is detachably secured to the up per ends of the members 14 and 15 and a drawer 17 is slidably mounted between said members below and adjoining said shelf.
Superimposed on the said side members is a top 17 comprising a relatively thin working board 18 having cleats 19 and 20 secured to the underside thereof adjacent to the outer end portions. Concave end members 21 and 22 are fixedly secured to the outer ends of the board 18 forming compartments 23 and 24: in which rollers 25 and 26 are rotatively mounted.
Said rollers are substantially cylindrical in shape and are cut away to receive segmental members 27, the peripheries of which are held in concentric alinement with said rollers by springs 28 the ends of which are secured to said rollers and to said segmental members.
The lower portions of said pawls are bent to form shoulders adapted to abut against the lower edge of the end members 21 and 22 when in the engaged position. The lower ends of said pawls are provided with notches 33 and grooves 3% extending therefrom.
It will be obvious that when the pawls 31 are held in engagement with the notches 29 the slits 87, between the rollers 26 and the segmental members 27, will be forced open by turning said rollers in a counter clockwise direction.
The slits 37 are adapted to register with apertures 38 and 39 provided in the top 18 through which the drawing paper 40 is arranged to pass. -When the slits 37 are opened the ends of the drawing paper 40 are inserted therein and the pawls 31 are released to the dotted position shown in Fig. 5. The ends of the paper will be clamped in the slits 37 by the released tension of the springs 28 and the drawing paper may be freely wound from one to the other of said rollers.
The top 17 is pivotally secured to the side supports by hinges 41 fastened to the cleat 19. The hinges 41 are concentric with toothed sectors 42 which are hingedly secured to the cleat 20 as at 43 and are arranged to move within the hollow members 15 when the top 17 is opened and closed as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The bifurcated side supports 10 and 11 together with the bifurcated bracket 13 are adapted to serve as a rack for holding rolls of drawing paper, etc. I
It will be seen that the table may be readily dismantled for shipment by removing the pins in the ends of the bar 12, and removing the shelf 16 and top 17.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation of my drafting table will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, but while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which 1 now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the deviceshown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the invention.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A drafting table comprising bifurcated side supports, a bar adapted to retain said side supports in spaced apart relation, a bifurcated bracket cent-rally mounted on said bar, a shelf mounted on the upper ends of said supports, a top pivotally mounted on said supports having transverse apertures disposed at both ends thereof, rollers rotatively mounted in said top below and adjacent to said apertures, segmental members disposed in angular grooves within said rollers, springs connecting said rollers and segmental members adapted to hold said segmental members against one wall and :away from the opposite wall of said angular grooves, locking pawls pivotally mounted on said top arranged to engage notches in said segmental members, means for retaining said pawl in and out of engagement with said notches, toothed sectors plvotally .secured to said top adapted to slidably move within hollow members of said side supports, and means for securing said top and sectors in a raised position.
2. A drafting table comprising bifurcated side supports, a bar adapted to retain said side supports in spaced apart relation, a bifurcated bracket centrally mounted on said bar, a shelf mounted on the upper ends of said supports,'a top pivotally mounted on said supports having transverse apertures disposed at both ends thereof, rollers rotatively mounted in said top below and ad- 'jacent to said apertures, segmental members disposed in angular grooves within said rollers, sprlngs connecting sa1d rollers and segmental members adapted to hold said segmental members against one wall and away from the opposite wall of said angular grooves, locking pawls pivotally mountedon said top arranged to engage notches in said segmental members, rod springs mount ed in said top having their outer ends arranged to engage notches in the lower ends of said pawls when same are in engagement with said segmental members, shoulders'disposed on the outer end portions ofsaid bar springs arranged to engage grooves in said pawls when same are out of engagement with sa1d segmental members, toothed sectors pivotally secured to said topadapted to slidably move within hollow members of said side supports, and means for securing said top end sectors in a raised position.
3. A drafting table comprising bifurcated side supports, a bar adapted to retainsaid side supports in spaced apart relation, a
compartments therebetween, rollers rotatively mounted in said compartments below and adjacent to said apertures, segmental members disposed in angular grooves within said rollers, springs connecting said rollers and segmental members adapted to hold said segmental members against one wall and away from the opposite wall of said angular grooves, lodking pawls pivotally mounted on said concave end members arranged to engage notches in said segmental members, rod springs mounted in said cleats having their outer ends arranged to engage notches in the lower ends of said pawls when same are in engagement with said segmental members, shoulders disposed on the outer end portions of said bar springs arranged to engage grooves in said pawls when same are out of engagement with said segmental members, toothed sectors pivotally secured to one of said cleats adapted to slidably move within hollow members of said supports, right angular springs secured to the upper ends of said side supports having their free ends arranged to engage the teeth of said sectors, and a trip rod rotatively mounted in said supports having shoulders thereon arranged to engage said right angular springs to throw same in and out of engagement with the teeth of said sectors.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 24th day of November, A. D.
VAINO LAURI.
