A c KNAPP. JAR CLOSURE.
APPLICATION FILED, .IAN- 17, I920- RENEWED OCT. 23, 1920.
Patented June 14, 1921 Invenfwr 1?. Cl ffnapp.
UNITED STATES A C KNAPP, OF KEWANEE, ILLINOIS.
JAR-CIDSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1921.
Application filed January 17, 1920, Serial No. 352,047. Renewed October 23, 1920. Serial No. 419,072.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A G KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Closures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in jar closures and has for its primary object the provision of means which can be conveniently turned into and out of engagement with the cover and when in engagement with the cover it will tightly hold the same in place, and said means can also be adjusted to increase and decrease the ten-- sion upon said cover.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a jar closure of the above stated 7 character, which shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
WVith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description, and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a jar closure illustrating the fastening elements in cover securing position,
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the fastening elements in non-cover securing position,
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the cover,
Fig. 4c is a detail view of one of the locking elements.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the neck of a jar or like container and on which is formed an annular shoulder. The neck of the jar is closed by a cover 3 constructed from any .material suitable for the purpose and is provided with spaced openings 4 to receive bolts 5. The heads 6 of the bolts 5 are disposed lowermost and engage under the shoulder 2 of the neck 1. Locking elements7 have formed therein slots 8 to receive the upper ends of the bolts 5 and have one of their ends bent at right angles to form wedging flanges 9. Nuts 10 are turned on the upper ends of the bolts 5 after the locking elements 7 have been placed on the bolts. The nuts 10 are adjusted on the bolts 5 so that when the the wedging flanges 9 of the locking elements are turned in engagement with the cover 3, said cover will be placed under pressure tightly sealing the jar. To remove the cover, the locking elements 7 are swung laterally from the jar or the cover disengaging the wedging flanges 9 thereby freeing the heads 6 from the shoulder 2 and permitting the cover to be removed.
While I have shown and described thepre-' ferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A jar closure including the neck of a jar having a flange, a cover resting on said neck, elements engaging the shoulder and passing through the cover, and locking elements carried by said elements and adapted to be turned against the cover.
2. A jar closure including the neck of a jar having a flange, a cover resting on the neck and having openings, bolts extending through said openings and having their heads disposed under the shoulder, and look ing elements rotatably secured on the bolts and adapted to be turned against the cover for securing said cover to the neck.
3. A jar closure including the neck of a jar having a flange, a cover resting on said neck and having openings, bolts extending through said openings and having their heads disposed under the shoulder, locking elements having slots therein receiving said bolts, right angled flanges formed on the locking elements and adapted to engage the cover, and nuts adjusted to the ends of the bolts.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A C KNAPP.
