Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MORLEY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN Tovs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,038, dated April 22, 1873; application filed February 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, THOMAS MORLEY, of the city of Newark, county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to theletters of reference marked thereon and forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan View of my invention, showing two guns in position; also the soldiers hinged in their respective positions, some bein g upright and others lying down. Fig. 2 is an end View showing the breastworks, gun, and soldiers.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a mimic battle-field, having the soldiers stationed at either end and secured in their respective positions by being hinged to the platform or field A in such a manner as that when struck by the projectiles from the guns 0 they will fall without interfering one with another in falling. The guns are also stationed at the ends of the field A, and work upon suitable pivots so that they may be pointed in any desired direction on said field. At each end of the field is a breastwork, D, sufficiently high to prevent the projectiles from the guns from hitting the gunners or other persons outside the breastworks. Said breastworks may be supplied with suitable port-holes 0, so that a number of guns may be used at the same time, if desired. The guns have an aperture, d, on the top of the breech large enough to receive the ball, which is projected from the gun by means of a projector operated by means of a coiled spring, as shown; said projector is connected to a wire extending out of the breech of the gun to the rear, and terminating in a ring or other suitable device easily seized by the gunner. When the ball is placed in the gun said projector is drawn back by the gunner, which, when released, forces the ball from the gun with greater or less force, according to the stiffness of the spring. The figures a being secured to the field A, in the manner set forth, are not liable to get misplaced or lost.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a toy battle-field, the figures a, representing artificial soldiers, secured by hinges to the field A, in the manner substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the field A, guns (3, and artificial soldiers at, in the manner substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
, THOMAS MORLEY.
