SPRING CATCH AND LOCI Z.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented liliay 31, 192].
Application filed December 21, 1920. Serial No. 432,228.
To cZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Rnison, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Catches and Locks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Fi 'ure l, a side view 01 the spring catch and lock, constructed in accordance with my invention, and shown in an open position.
Fig.2, a similar view, showing the parts in a locked position.
Fig. 3, a top, or plan, view of the device, with the locking plate turned to the unlocked position.
Fig. 4, a similar view, with the locking plate turned to its locked position.
This invention relates to an improvement in spring catch and locks adapted for use on screen doors, trunks, automobile hoods, and in a variety of places in which a movable part is to be connected with a stationary part, the object being to provide a simple construction whereby not only a spring catch is provided, but means by which the catch is converted into a positive lock, and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of: parts as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I form a base member 5 from. a strip of sheet metal. bent upward between its ends, which are provided with screw holes 6, by which it may be attached, with an arch 7, and a shoulder 8. Superimposed upon the arch is a catch 9, having; its rear end turned newnward, tin-(nigh a, clearance-hole 11, formed for it in the strap and provided at its torward em. with a hooked nose 12. the latch is held in place by a stud 13, formed at its 1.. wer end with a head 14, and with a shoulder 15, formed by reducing the outer end of the stud. The outer end 16 of the stud is further reduced to receive lockin plate 17, which is longitudinally bowed, and formed with an operating handle 18. Upon the stud below the arch is a spring 19, the strap, latch, and lock preferably formed from strips of metal of substantially uniform width. This device is used in connection with a finger 20, provided at its end with a hook 21, adapted to pass between the nose and the shoulder 8, being free to thus pass between them by the yielding of the spring 10, the device thus acting as a spring catch.
To loclr the finger 20, the locking plate 17 is turned into line with the catch, at which time its ends bear upon the outer face of the catch and draw the shoulder of the stud to a bearing against the under face of the arch, thereby any movement of the catch is prevented, so that the finger 20 can not be removed. it"hen tie locking: plate is turned at right angles to the catch, the catch is free to move sufficiently to release the finger 20.
I claim:
1. A. spring catch and lock, comprising'a strip formed with an such and a shoulder, a catch resting upon said arch and formed with a nose, a stud extending through said arch and catch, a locking plate secured to the outer end of the stud, and provided with bearings adapted to be turned into the said catch, a locking finger adapted to be entered between the catch and shoulder.
Aspirin catch and lock, comprising a ormed with an arch and a shoulder, a cot- 1h resting upon said arch and formed th nose, a spring stud extending through d arch and catch, a locking plate secured f the spring stud, and proi u adapted to be turned into the said catch, a locking linger adapted to be entered between the catch and shoulder.
-" A spring; catch and lock, comprising a rmed with an arch and shoulder, a
c. be .ring upon said arch, and having it i ment with the strip, and formed at its outer end with a nose, a sh elder spring stud ext upward through the arch and catch, n plate secured to the upper and a finger adapted to be ween the catch and shoulder. timony whereof, I have signed this tion in the presence of two subing witnesses.
