TABULAR SUBFILING FOLDER.

Be it known that I, MARX Holm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain' new and useful Improve ments in Tabular Subiling Folders, and declare the ,following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make andjuse the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings which forml apart of this specification.

My' invention hasforits object to produce a simple and novel device in the form of a lfoldei' such as employed in the vertical filing l of'letters of usual or cap size, containing a large numberof pockets adapted to hold cards orv slips vpreferably in such relation to each other as automatically to tabulate and `present to the eye in organized form the data carried bythe cards or slips. e

Thevarious features of novelty whereby my invention 'is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in `the claims; but, for a full understanding ofi my invention-f and of its object and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with y the accompanyingy drawing, wherein:

Figure l is a plan view of a folder, open so as to lie flat, having on one of the leaves or sections a plat of pockets some of which con@ tain cards or slips;

Fign is a section on an enlarged scale taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. l, only a fragment of the folder being shown;

Referring to Figs. l to l of the drawing, l and 2 are the two leaves or halves of a folder which may conveniently be one ofthe commonly used folders of heavy Manila paper large enough to receive letter paper or legal cap paper. kThe inner side of the member l is covered with a series of pockets so disposed that slips or cards may be inserted in directions at right angles to the hinge or fold. The sheet is creasedin this way throughout its, entire length to produce the desired number of pockets; At each end of the panel or section lying between the creases` 6 and 7 and all cor`- responding panels'or sections, is a projecting tab, l0, having a width in the direction of the length of the sheet preferably equal to the distance between the upper edges of adjacent rowsrof pockets in the completed device; that is, equal to the distance between the edges 6() and 8O in Fig. l, for example. It will thus be seen that when the sheet is folded along the line 5 and then folded in the reverse direction along the line 6 so that the panel or section between the lines 6 and 7 overlies the panel or section between the lines 5 and 6 and a corresponding area in the sheet above the line 5, the tabs, 10, may be folded around the edge of the sheet and, when pasted or glued to the rear side, will close the ends of the upper single long pocket extending entirely across the sheet. Then, when the sheet is again folded along the line 7 and reversely folded along the line 8, the neXt set of tabs is brought close up to the first set and, When folded around to the back side of the sheet and fastened there by gluends of the uppermost long pocket and at the Sametime closes the upper ends of the secondV long pocket. In this Way, when the entire sheet has been folded into pockets, the tabs form, in eEect, acontinuous binding from one end to the other; each of the panels or sections corresponding to that between the lines 6 and 7 being made sufiiciently- Wider than the panels or sections corresponding to that between the lines 5v and 6, to bring about this particular relation between vthe tabs.

After the sheet has been folded or plaited it is stitched along lines at right angles to the creases or folds as indicated at 11, in order to divide each long pocket into any desired number of short pockets; The completed plat is then fastened to the inner side of one of the leaves of the folder, preferably by means of glue or paste.` c In Figs-2 and 3 I have illustrated, in sections taken at right angles to each other, in

aneXaggerated form, the construction o f the completed device; the pockets being indicated at 12. It will be seeni that the exposed or front Wall of each pocket is `made. up of two thicknesses or layers of material, as indicated at 13 and 14; thus producing a strong, substantial structure. i

In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 there is a plat of pockets, 15, similar to the one just described While on the other half of the folder is a second plat having pockets arranged at righ-t angles tothe pockets in the plat 15, so that the folder must be held With the fold or hinge vertical or extending at rightangles from the observer, in order to bring the pockets into an upright position. The pockets in the plat 16, furthermore, are larger than those in the other plat. I'IoW- ever, the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 is simply intended to be illustrative of one of mg or pasting, completes the closure of the many modifications that may be made, as it will of course be understood that the size and disposition of the pockets, and the relative arrangement on both sides of the folder,

if both sides are utilized, is a matter of choice, depending upon the use towhich the device is to be put.

A plat of pockets made out of a single sheet of flexible material folded` into plaits and having oppositely projectingA tabs at intervals folded around the edges' of the plaited sheet and having. their free ends secured by pasting, whereby there is formed a series ofpocketsA closed at the ends bysaid tabs.
