` NOVELTY.
retener.
Specicaton of Letters Patent. Panted ApL 26, 1921,0
Application filed November 19, 19179.* Serial No. 339,091.`
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, HUGO SCHREPFER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of l/V est Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and t-vtate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Novelties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to novelties, and has for its main object the provision of an attractive novelty which is simple in operation, inexpensive in cost of manufacture, and which will provide a plaything for both young and old.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novelty having a mechanical operation, the mechanism thereof being concealed from view and creating an air of mystery to a spectator. f
rlhe above and other objects will become apparent in the descfiption below, in which characters of reference refer to like named parts in theaccompanying drawings, which form a part of this application.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure l is a front view of my device.
Fig. 2 is an abbreviated front view ofl the device showing the figure thereinin a different position than that shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is another abbreviated front view showing the manner of operation of the device.
Fig. 4l is a cross-sectional view of the same substantially on the line 4-4 vof Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is a view of the strip of paper carrying the illustrations shown in Figs. l and 2.
Referring briefly to the drawings, the numeral l represents a frame having an opening 2 therein. A strip of paper of'a width slightly greater than that of the said opening, and of a length several times larger than the same, indicated by 7, is secured to the rear of said frame by its upper and lower ends 7a; glue or any convenient paste may be used for this purpose. Said strip is provided with two pictures or sketches, one of which represents a figure in one position, and the other in another position; for the purpose of illustration I have chosen to present the figure of a persons head showing the person awake in one position and asleep in the other, although I do not of course, desire to limit myself to these subjects. A space 1l is provided on said strip between said pictures 3 and 4.' A flat for instance,-is secured against the blank space ll, as by glue, and a handle 5 is secured to the rear of said space, in the manner shown, for the purpose of operating the device. A fiat member 8, of the same material, has a slot i12 therein, through which thesaid strip 7 passes twice, as shown; said member 8 is vertically slidable. A narrow member 6, also of the saine material, is pasted by its ends to the sides of said slot l2 and just over the fold of the strip 7 therein so as to conceal the same, yet not prevent the strip 7 from being able to freely pass to and fro through said slot.
It is now apparent that, assuming the picture shown in Fig. l t0 be in view, and the handle in the upper position, if said handle is moved down, the members 8, 6 and 10 will follow, and the strip 7, the ends of which remain.' stationary, will'be moved in the manner which is clear from Fig. 4c, so that the picture shown in Fig. 1 will disappear and the picture shown in Fig. 2
'will appear, the member. 6, during this transformation, passing from the upper to the lower part ofthe opening 2, so that it impresses the observer as though the said' member 6 erases the`"pictiire which first was visible, and its movement appears to create the second picture, Again, upward motion of said handle will cause disappearance of Jczihe second picture and reappearance of the rst. i.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Fatent is as follows:
A. device of the class described comprising a frame having an opening therein, a strip of paper having two pictures drawn thereon, one of said pictures showing the ligure of a person in one position and the other showingV said figure in another position, lsaid pictures being longitudinally spaced apart and the endsof said strip being secured -to the rear of said frame, a handle, an enlarged member rigid with the upper end of said handle, the central porpiece of material l0, such as pasteboard,
tion of said strip being attached about S21-id enlarged member, a slotted member lying between said enlarged member and said frame, said strip passingrthrough said slot in both directions, a member bridging said slot so as t0 conceal the line separating the two folds of the strip passing through said slot, said handle being movable alternately up and down.
Signed at New York, in the county of 10 New York and State o1" New York, this 11th day of NOVember,r19l9.
vHUGO SCHREPFER.
